Title: Does this make sense?
Post by: jlnft on July 26, 2009, 08:25:00 PM
I'm setting up a set of carbons for a possible pig hunt. I usually shoot wood.

I shoot a Rick Welch "Pro Hunter" recurve. 60"  53# @ 28" and draw 29". I'm using GT Trads 35/55's full length(30.25" BOP). I bareshafted them out to 18yds(safe distance in the backyard). Using 225gr. point weight(100gr insert and 125 field point). The bareshafts were slightly weak and the fletched arrows seemed to fly great.

My first thought was that these shafts would be way too weak??? Please help me out, does it make sense to you?

By the way, I used Stu Miller's calculator.....it says they should be weak also!!

Thanks in advance,
Joe

Try pluging in 29.8 for arrow lenght in the calculator. the calculator as a default of .9" calced into it for incert lenght, a 100 grain brass incert is 3/8" longer than .9. The incert makes the part of the arrow it makes contact with non-flexable taking it out of the lenght equation. 3/8" does not seem like much but on a carbon arrow a short amount of lenght cut off can make a big differance.

With all that said if they are flying great sounds like your good to go.

Bud if your broadheads are grouping I would be very happy with that.  It seems like it really depends on the individual and their set up to me.  I can shoot that full length arrow out of my 45 pound longbow with 275 on the front and I think it is still just a touch stiff for me. So what I am saying is I bet you are close.  But some people will agree you are close and just as many will say you are off, so  like I said I think it must depend on the individual.  Take it for what it is worth.  If you are grouping and have good flight can't ask for anymore than that.

I'm shooting full length, which on my GT trad 35/55's is 30.5 inches from the end of the shaft to the valley of the nock out of a hummingbird recurve that is 60" long and is 50# @ 28 inches. My draw length is 29.5 inches. I also have a 50 grain brass insert in the business end of the shaft with 145 grain tips.

By EVERYTHING that I can find, including Stu Miller's newest version of the spine chart, I should be WEAK. That being said, they shoot just fine.......as a matter of fact, better than fine. Oh, and by the way, the hummingbird recurve is cut to center.

Go figure ??? I know that a person's release has an effect on the way an arrow comes off of the bow, but I am at a loss to explain this.

So............I'm gonna just keep shooting them, and not worry about the charts, and what should work, and shouldn't. If it aint broke, I'm not even gonna try to comprehend trying to fix it.

Here, I was all ready to purchase me some of the GT 55/75's down at ATAR, and I didn't even need to spend the money......I'm sure glad that I brought those 35/55's with me. I had just acquired the bow, and hadn't even shot it until after I arrived at ATAR.

Anyone have any ideas......or explanations to this situation ???

I'm shooting full length GT35/55 with 250 grains up front, out of my Samick Stingray marked #45 @ 28" measured @ my 29" she's actually #49. I had to build out my side plate about 1/4" from the riser to get perfect flight with bareshafts and broadheads but they fly perfect now.

Shoot a fletched arrow through paper at about three yards. That should confirm what is going on.
