A question for those who own or have owned bows a zircote riser. How would you compare the weight to the heavier rosewoods? Did it add a significant amount of mass weight to the bow? Also any pics of zircote bows would be appreciated as a future project could be in the works.
Thanks
pounds per cubic foot
Brazilian Rosewood 47-56
Ziricote 50-60
Indian Rosewood 53
Honduras Rosewood 58-68
Cocobolo 61-75
For example...a solid Ziricote riser would weigh probably 2.88 oz LESS than a Cocobola riser. (based on a 18" riser)........It's a fine replacement for some of the unstable ebonies.......makes a great duck call too :)
Here is a Zircote riser on a new TallTines; pictures don't do it justice. I'm going to get me one of these!

Weight seemed very similar to my Cocobolo riser TallTines.
I'm the fact guy....Steve is the face guy!

Steve O. is that the bow Brian had at the PBS gathering last weekend?

Steve is correct in that most zircote that I have seen looks plain black from a distance but up close has a lot of browns and swirls. Mine is even darker than the bow in Steve's post. I like they way it looks it everybit as good as ebony if not better.
I had a honduran rosewood riser in a one piece that felt a little bit heavier. Hard to compare as they were different designs. I wouldn't hesitate to get a bow with either wood.

My Zipper SXT will have Zircote and Bloodwood in the riser. It is pic #5 on the Zipper website Riser Wood Example section. Can't wait to see it in person, just waiting on the new limbs now!
Man that Tall tines is a knock out!!!
Yes it is. That is some really nice wood, and the kind I'm thinking about.
That TallTines Zircote has as much grain as some bacote I've seen. Sure is purty.
Mike,
Yes, that is what Brian (who I am told was labeled the best shooter of our group by the guy NOT shooting) was using at the Odd Year Gathering. Does it make you want to change to one you have on order?
Everybody else; that overlay is Kingwood to match the limbs on that particular TT.
Some nice looking bows.
Steve, No I got my own combination in mind.
Yes Brian took some time to get warmed up....it was the first time he shot that bow. I think it was a 60"er that drew about 66#@28".
as others have said, from afar, my bow just looks plain dark chocolate. close up it has a lot of character and i love it...it's subtle like myself! i also have it on the veneers but have yet to take a worthy picture.
i have handled some rosewood-type great plains bows and i would say that my bow is lighter. i haven't handled many others but would say mine is about average/midweight.

also, my buddy at Swafford Knives snagged my scraps from Brandon and made me this knife as a gift. (http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s208/sndmn11/misc055.jpg)

Best shooter in the group...Ha! I think you took that prize SteveO. I'll be getting in several bd/ft of that highly figured ziricote in a couple weeks.
Man o man, lets hear some more about those Talltines bows. That is a unique looking riser.
I just received my new Marriah Thermal from Ric. He used Ziricote and Bocote in the riser with Yew accents and the limbs are Yew with Bocote wedges and Bocote and Ziricote limb pads. The Ziricote is gorgeous. It almost looks iridescent as it reflects the light. The piece of Bocote he chose to go with it is quite dark, too, and they make quite a combination. It will make for natural camouflage in the woods. I'll try to get some pics of the bow up tomorrow. It is 60" and 46#@28". Sweet, sweet bow.
Bill
Izzy- Brian makes the very durable TallTines bows in his shop in Iowa. He is just starting out selling to the public, although he has made many bows for friends previously. As far as I know, no one has done a draw force of efficience test on them. The closes refrence is Steve's independent test.
Based on this thread I changed my riser combination to highly figured bubinga and zircote. I think I will stay with the waterfall bubinga veneers though, since I plan to use veneers cut from the same stock on my own one-piece I'm building. Brian is a great guy and he should have a bow he built for Biggie Hoffman going out the door soon, so we will get some better feed back on longer models (64"). I odered a 64" myself. For more information just PM Talltines tg member # 5473 for details. Mike
Another thing about Brian, he ordered a Primal Drerams armguard from me two days before he was going on a grizzly bear hunt. I said, "You're going it prety close aren't you?" His reply was, "You think that's bad, finish is still wet on the bow I just made for my self to hunt with." He took the bow and the arm and a few days into the hunt Brian took the grizzly pictured in his Avatar. Cool guy! Unlike me, he always remains calm. Ha! Mike
Here's a few pics of my new Marriah Thermal with a Ziricote and Bocote riser.
