Title: Making my first armguard!
Post by: Apex Predator on July 23, 2009, 08:07:00 AM
I've started my first armguard.  I needed a new one, so decided to build my own.  I studied as many photos as I could find online and came up with this design.  My old ones were thinner and would curl up in the front by my wrist.  This one has two layers of 8 oz veg tanned leather.  I thought the snakeskin would add something special, and I was right.  I didn't get the pattern lined up perfectly, but I still think it's gonna be sharp.  I still have to stitch the second oval, remove a few scales on the skin, figure out how I want to rig the straps, stain it, and burnish the edges.  I've got about 2 hours in stitching alone, and am not finished yet!  I really don't know how someone can build and sell these for $40-50.  I was hoping you guys could give me an idea on the securing system.  I will use stretch cord if necessary, but think rawhide lace would look much better.  What do you folks think?

Very nice

How about some antler tips and elastic for securing? Put 3 tips, evenly spaced, down one side and elastic loops down the other.

Chris

Looks great Marty.

Chris has a great idea with the antler tips or maybe antler buttons and loops.

Nice job.  The stitching looks great.  I agree with Chris on the antler buttons.

Thanks folks!  What should I finish the skins with?  It needs to be flexible, obviously.

That looks great Rick.  I think I will do something similar with leather lacing, and an antler button to cinch tight on the bottom.

Maybe a buffalo head nickle instead of antler. Hap

Marty,
Montana Pitch Blend should be perfect on the skins and leather....

Its got snake skin ,I'd use snake vertabrae for the buttons, from a large snake of course.

Last night I applied a light stain, and made some buttons.  I found a section of antler just the right size with a little character.  These are two piece buttons, with a smaller diameter piece glued on the underside.  I think it is more functional this way.  I laced it up and was not happy with the raw hide.  I didn't have enough hands to make it easy for me.  I will pick up some stretch cord today.  This thing is really stiff as well.  Will neets foot oil soften it and make it a little more pliable?

Neatsfoot will soften and also darken the leather if that doesnt bother..it looks excellent though,,you did a great job..burnish the edges with some glycerin soap and a smooth bone..that will really enhance your work
