Title: Montana Help!
Post by: Robhood23 on July 23, 2009, 12:22:00 AM
My father in law and I drew area 410 archery tags (south side of the breaks) and am wondering if anyone out there has hunted the area prior and has any advice they would be willing to share that would help with our adventure!
Thanks, Jamie

And ATV's, sadly there is a lot of rule braking out there.  I don't hunt there, just know a lot of folks who won't go back due to some bad stewardship in the area.

I used to guide in that general area, like said expect to see alot of people, but you can also expect to see alot of mature bulls!  The trick is getting far enough off the beaten path and find elk that have not been to disturbed, the best tactic in that area is ambush them heading to and from agriculture, you can almost forget about bugling and calling a decoy works fair but again that to has been ruined through repetition.  The main thing is cover alot of ground and have good optics to spot elk with and then plan a course of action, waterholes are also good in the early part of the year, unless of course it rains, which brings me to the most important item if it rains make sure he is in a position where he can get out whether by foot or vehicle, cuz just a little moisture he WILL NOT get a vehicle thru even the most maintained roads that Gumbo(mud) is unpassable for a few days, heed this warning or he will be sitting there until it dries up or Freeze up!  Good luck he will see alot of elk.
