This thread is to help us get ready for the hunt. I know it is still 6 months out but hey, it won't hurt to get an early start.
Vanilla Gorilla (Cam) and I are booked for 24-29 Jan. I have a military buddy who is also probably going to attend the same time frame.
Great Idea Razorsharptokill
Myself, Buckster and Steel are all booked for 1-5 Jan. I live in Western Oklahoma so if anyone else is booked from OK for these dates please chime in...I am driving from Western Oklahoma.
I am with toehead's group I have already double checked my gear I will need for the hunt. Stinking rats had ate holes in my tent other than that I think i am good to go.
Okies are invadin' over the red river!
I've been testing my broadhead/arrow flight this morning. If I could get my grizzlys to sharpen I'd use them, they fly great. Looks like Zwickey deltas for hogs and snuffers for Javies. I've heard that Curtis's hogs are "uparmored" like the hummers in Iraq.
Those Crane Hogs are tough. I Shot a 300# black one with a tree shark and never found it after trailing blood for over a mile and a half it just gave out. Curtis is one great tracker too. His skills are amazing. The tusk on those badboys are better than any I have seen. The Javies carry some good cutters too. I did get one of those. I am out of work or I would be planning for this hunt too. Hope you all slay them.
Donald
I will be driving from Iowa and hunting January 18th-23rd. I really hope to get a shot or two at the javelina. Hogs and rabbits will be fun too. I will probably be shooting my PLGA and bringing my A&H for backup. CE Heritage 250's and woodsman broadheads will be what I am flinging at them.
Any advise on the weather that time of the year?
Sending My deposit off tomorrow for My son, son-in-law and Myself I think We decided on the 18th - 23rd also.
I'll be shooting a Tomahawk SS and a Dryad Orion. Heritage 250's from the Tomahawk and GT 55/75 Traditionals from the Dryad. Not sure on broadheads yet.
Sent deposits out today for me, my brother, and my friend for Jan. 4-8. First time hunting for javelinas, any tips to help a first timer.
I'll be shooting a 50# DAS knetic hunter with
carbon heritage 150's and snuffer heads.
sending my deposit in tomorrow for the Jan. 24 thru 29. see you all their.
doug77
I'm a 1st timer too. From what I can tell by reading old posts and pm'ing members who have been there done that, is Curtis is the hog Jedi. He knows what he's talking about with the hogs and Javis on his ranches. I plan on doing a whole lot of listening and avoiding the learning curve he's already traversed.
As far as my gear, I'll be bringing my BBO with rivercane arrows tipped with Jeremy's hardened trade points. I think that set up will be reserved for smaller hogs and Javies.
My go to bow is a KennyM designed longbow that I built and is 55 @ 28" shooting Zwickey deltas on full ength GT 3555's. 100 grains of weight up front. If I could get my grizzlies sharp they would be going too.
Curtis told me that it could anywhere from 15 to 95 degrees so check the ten day forecast before you leave so you know what to pack.
Same as Jim, I've never hunted javelina. Never been anywhere in Texas except for Amarillo and Dallas a few times.
For weapons, I'll be bringing a 48# Great Plains Rio Bravo, with 560gr of Beman shaft and Ace broadheads.
Also on my roster is a 54# longbow named Solomon Grundy (remember the Green Lantern comics?) Its big and ugly and shoots the same arrows as my recurve.
Think I'll be bringing a ghillie suit, too.
I went last year in may and took a 215 lb red pig on the last night but spooked a 350 plus pig the night before at 12 yards trying to draw. We all hunted out of brush blind setups where you would shoot either sitting or kneeling. I used a db stool but be ready to shoot in either way. We also hunted until midnight and used blue lights with silent switches. I used a small maglight taped to my stringtracker unit which screwed into my stabilizer insert on the riser. I duck taped some blue plastic film on the light. Other guys had tactical lights with blue lenses and silent switches bolted or taped to bowfishing reel attachments which fit on their risers. Either way, be able to see and shot silently at night with a blue light for targets about 15 18 yards in front of you. We hunted in the brush blinds during the day and after dark we moved out of the brush blinds and hunted in front of the blinds. The blue light should illuminate the pigs without illuminating the inside of the brush blinds. If you used the light inside the blind, all you see is the brush around you. That was the first time I hunted on the ground without my db blind but my guilly suit worked great. Bring something (bowie knife or short machete or gerber tool) able to cut brush and small shovel for small pit blinds.
I'm booked for the feb 14- 19, 2010 hunt and looking forward to hunting javes also. My last trip was too late in the season to hunt em but the ranch was covered up with em. Bring your judos and hex heads for the rabbits, lizards and anything else you want to stump shoot for. Weather, expect everything and anything in west texas. I wish I could give you better advise but its can vary alot there in a matter of hours on the plains out there. There is not alot of humidity there so the nights will be cold and the weather can change quickly. Bring wool. Regardless, You will have a ball.
Will be sending out the deposit to Curtis next Friday. Jan 24-27. This will be my first booked hunt ever!! I'm so jazzed that I'm trying to pack now.
Will be bringing the new Martin Jag T/D #55 and my old Pearson Rogue #50. Still working out the arrow builds, but will be Vapors for sure.
I just got 3 Rivers DVD "Javelina" and have almost wore it out. I wish it was 3 hours instead of 35 mins.
Umm.......what about those nasty slithering things with the nasty fangs? Are they hibernatin' about then?
They should be sleeping. If not, we texans like to stick em, eat em and wear em on our bows and boots. Don't worry too much about it in Jan or Feb. Any deer capable bow will do with the piggies along as you shoot heavier arrows. I'll be bringing back my 48 lb bob lee classic elite. Curtis will show you a great time.
Thanks for the info, Brent!
If you need anything else, give me a holla. I'm stoked about going back.
I'm heading on the New Year's hunt, this will be a swine time for all!
Chris, I'll give you a call and weather report after our hunt. It can vary quite a bit this time of year, but will probably be fairly mild compared to what you are used to for this time of year.
If you come through Central AR, give me a ring buddy!
Hello, Greetings from Virginia. I have been considering this hunt for my wife and I. We have hunted Texas in past years. I have taken hogs and javelina, my wife has only taken small game. If we made the hunt it would probably be Jan 24 - 29. I know some guys are put off by having a woman in camp. I shoot an A&H - ACS. My wife currently shoots a Jeff Massie longbow.
Good hunting!
Phil
Nonsense, Phil, your wife will be welcomed as if she were family!
Thanks Barry! I hope you all start it out with a great hunt!!
Phil my daughter will be their with me the same week you are planning. see ya their
doug77
Sounds good! I'll give Curtis a call and get things rolling.
Good Hunting!
Had My dates wrong We're going the 21st through the 24th. Thursday til Sunday. Can't wait!!!!
Has anybody hunted this ranch before? What is it like? I have never hunted for javes before so I'am looking for all the info I can get.
Has anybody hunted with curtis? any hunting storeis? I can't wait for january. thanks Joe
This is the same ranch we hunted this past may. Its 25 miles south of Odessa, Texas. Its sandy, scrubby, flat, no trees except mesquite and cactus, a typical west texas ranch that is as big as the eye can see. Its real big. Its ugly to most, except to the bowhunter and the thousands of critters that call it home. If you rent a car or drive in, 4x4 is very useful. The place has an area for tent camping but Curtis also had a metal barn to sleep in and was putting in a cooke shack. This is not 5 star living according to most but its perfect for what we do. Camp was very friendly and everyone including Curtis amd Mark Horne made us feel right at home. When we first got there, we started corning the roads and hunting off of the water holes in brush blinds. However once you see that the pigs are hitting corn along a pot on the road, they should come back to that same spot the next night. Set up a brush blind there 15 yards off the road. Most of the pig hunting on our trip was in the evening so we scouted around and made new brush blinds for the coming hunt, shot lizards, bugs, (at) birds and stumped during the day, typical deer camp sillyness. It was great. Curtis will go over all of his strategies. You will learn alot from the Curtis and about hunting and whispering to pigs. I've shot a decent number of them with my curve and I sure learned alot. Wish I was going out there with you but I'll be there a few weeks later in Feb.
Phillip she's a traditional bowhunter and an equal in my book. Bring her if she wants to come along.
Our dates are 25-29 JAn. Not 24-29.
Here is some of my Javi mojo. Trade points by Jeremy here on the gang. Oklahoma river cane shafts with Oklahoma turkey feathers from last fall.
Jeremy can certainly make strong and extremely sharp broadheads! The bevel and edge on these really sold me on the KME sharpener. I just gotta get one!

These will be flying out of my BBO longbow I built.

Beautiful arrows!
Brent, Thanks for posting that info. It's always good to get things from a hunters perspective.
We generally hunt javelina by morning and day. We generally target hogs in the evenings and night. Javelina are generally lazy and sleep late in the mornings. If it's cold they'll lakely not wake up till 10-11:00am. They move in the daylight and like the heat if there is any(Winter). Hogs are generally nocturnal by nature but do move in the daylight. We see hogs all times of the day out in West Texas. I've shot them at 12 noon, 1 oclock, 3 oclock. They move good in the daylight if there is a cold front moving through. The hogs out in West Texas are of the armor variety. They also have huge tusks!!!! There is some serious European bloodline in these hogs. I've seen some boars that have armor from their front shoulder all the way to cover their hind quarter. Ask Dave Stinson about the armor on his first big boar out there. I've never seen hogs with a shield covering the entire length of the body. That's no exaggeration!!! Brents hog had good armor too! CK

Thats perfect! So do I!
Hey Curtis..(or anybody who can answer) Is there gonna be a grill, smoker or any kind of cooking equipment available for food prep, or do we need to bring stuff?
Does anybody have some hunting stories from out there for javelinas or pics of kills, I'am so excited I don't know how I'am going to make it till january. thanks Joe

Gee Thanks for making this whole waiting thing worse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great pics, by the way. Thanks.
Thats all part of the fun - waiting. I have been doing it every year now for past 6yrs. It's so much fun I drove back down for a second hunt with Curtis this year. No short drive either it's 32hrs one way! I love huntin hawgs.
Hogs are wonderful, aint they?
I'm pumped up about the javies and the rabbits!
:bigsmyl: Thanks again for the pics. CK
Here's a great story on my website that Stony wrote up a few years ago. It was one of the most special hunts I'd ever been on. Someone, something, somehow, placed us all on that bridge transcending time together. It was here that we found ourselves in the moonlight as a silent hush fell over us and the only trickle of movement to be found was the cool night air as it blew across the goosebumps on the back of our necks. Stony\\'s story (http://cdkellar.com/tx-story.html)
That one gave me goose bumps, Curtis.
Hunt it, thanks for posting the pictures. 32hrs drive one way! I thought it was bad for us - 28 hrs one way. I've made the trip several times. I've hunted ranches in the Laredo, and Benavides area.
Keep em sharp!
Phil
I talked to Curtis and he has received my deposit. I'm going to shoot my 55lb at 28" A&H ACS. I haven't decided on arrows yet, but I'll probably shoot Grizzlystik Alaskans with Magnus Stinger 125 gr broadheads for a total arrow weight of 630 grains.
TTT
Cause its only 162 days away!!!
Thanks for the pics. hunt it. I'll be showing those to My son and son-in-law to fire them up a little. They're both really excited about this trip. Me too!!! Come on Jan.
Great story! I often think about stuff like that while afield with the bow. Has another hunter walked this same path a 1000-10,000 years ago? I also wonder some times what the animal I will take next is doing at this very moment. Eventually our paths will cross and my arrow will find it's mark.....or not.
AHHHH!!!!!! 5 1/2 months and counting. I think the clock is slow. I don't feel tardy.
Is it January yet?

Very nice! Looks just like a pig Charlie Lamb shot down behind my house. Congrats! CK
Any updates on the ranch we'll be on?
I'll get you some critter pics next week Jim. I know that the javelina have done very well this year. There's been pretty good rainfall in West Texas compared to the rest of the state. It's done good for the animals. Hogs are always abundant. CK
Excellent! I can't wait!!
Hey Curtis do you have any coordinates so we can google earth the ranch where we will be hunting? Can wait for January!
No coordinates right now. I dropped my last GPS rather hard and I haven't seen any coordinates since. I've been navigating by compass. :saywhat: Maybe someone returning from the trip next week will have a GPS coordinate to share. CK
I just looked 15 miles east of Crane Tx.
We'll be west of Crane.
Yeah that's what I meant.. derrrr.

We're hitting the road around 8;00 PM. It will be about 12 hrs. of driving and a good breakfast away.
Looks like better weather than the first group had. I hope the rain holds off.
bretto
Good luck and safe travels to all. Leave a few - we'll be there soon for the Sweat Hunt.
I'm looking at about 16 hours of windshield time, so thats a stop somewhere Saturday night.
Maybe I should take the Viking stickers off the truck?
Well You never have to worry about having K.C. CHIEFS stickers on your truck. People in other states that have teams just laugh and feel sorry for you.
Dave, We won't kill all of em. I'm looking forward to a great hunt and a little success wouldn't suck if Ya know what I mean.
My son and son-in-law are going so it's going to be a great hunt regardless. The weather is going to be better. Getting away from home is good sometimes. And hunting out of state is always exciting. Wish us luck. And everyone have a safe trip!!!
bretto
Good luck guys! Plug in the ipod and play some texas music and you will be there in no time. Pay attention to what Curtis tells you. If you are consistent in your game plan you should be successful. You will have a good time any way you look at it. Take lots of pics.
Once you have some meat for fare, insist that Curtis make some stew.
He made some stew with pork tenderloins and javelina back strap, and it was killer.
I ate 3 bowls and went back for more that evening.
Good luck guys. You will have a blast.
Paul
Yeah, I'm lookin for the CK Stew!!!!!!!! I'll be droolin all the way there.

I'm thinking of bringing the helmet with me and going after the hawgs in it!!!
Them big 'ol boars will think You've got bigger cutters than they do and will head the other way.
I'll be all packed up and ready for launch Saturday evening.
I'll be headed out at 0230 Sunday to meet Cam (Vanilla Gorilla) and my buddy Shannon South of OKC at 0500.
Sooners are invading over the Red River!

Are you there now Bretto? If so how is it going?
Bretto, Hopefully you'll still be cleaning critters when we come pulling up!
611 miles... Two days and a wake up. I'm ready to get this trip started! This will be my 1st out of state outfitted hunt. I've waited too long! I should have been doing this long ago!
You and me both Jim, this is my 1st also.
Good luck Cam and Jim, my future fellow Oklahomans.
