I have shot a recurve about 15 years now, But I am looking to try a longbow, problem is my area has very few longbow shooters so I am looking for input on your favorite longbow.
It needs to be a takedown around 50# @ 28 weight range and I like the looks of a true hill style longbow. Tell me what you like.........
Mohawk.
I have seen the ad and it looks good.
hows the hand shock. is it pretty fast and stable?
Border Griffon GL. Read pete wards review on peteward.com. Contact Border. Sid@borderbows.com I believe.
How bout a Hill? As smooth and original as they come!
I second the Mohawk. I haven't shot the takedown model but I do have a one piece and it shoots great.
how do the hills shoot, I have been looking hard at the hill and the mohawk.mohawks sure are sharp looking.
Oh yea the Mohawk is the one for sure . I have a takedown Mohawk and it is one smooth and quite shooter .
Mike
Mohawk for me to. Vince makes a great LB. Ken
Personally, I love it. It seems to be one of those love it or hate it things. I've had lots of people shoot it, and most seem to like it a lot. I can't think of a smoother drawing, easy to shoot bow.
DOLLAR for DOLLAR NO BS! :readit:  :archer: Vince makes the best Longbow out there for the money! Sorry I sold mine. Love the Guy like a Brother. bentpole>>>>~~~~> MOHAWK!
Smooth draw. Like a baby's behind . No hand shock QUIET!!! AND the fastest mild reflex /deflex Longbow I ever shot! :notworthy:
larry,
any and all topics that ask loaded questions such as "what's a good longbow?", "what would you recommend?", "recurve or longbow?", "2 blade, 3 blade or 4 blade?", etc. etc. etc., are totally useless for the question poser. all yer getting are the opinions of others, people who (we'd surely hope) have formed their opinions based solely via hands-on experience (again, we hope).
reviews are interesting reading, as there are hard facts you'll learn. we do have a reviews forum for you to check out. reviews should all be read with the same opinion viewpoint expressed above.
to find out what longbow will work best for you requires hands on testing. period. and even then, it might take quite some shooting to discover what was the best thing since sliced bread ain't any more. some bowyers offer trial bows via mail - i suggest you seek those folks out first if you really have no local access to longbows.
other than that, threads like this are amusing at best - and there may come a day when they won't be allowed. :scared:
By the way Rob,what do you shoot? :saywhat:
seem like a lot of mohawk fans here,

i have a few hills, i like the nostalgia they afford.
a hill is a straight limbed longbow with a braced "D" limb shape.
a mohawk is mild r/d longbow with braced "D" limb shape.
mild r/d longbows are inherently faster that straight limbed longbows, without sacrificing that "longbow stability" factor.
them's the facts, jack. both longbow styles are quite worthy on the hunt, as history proves. bottom line, you need to shoot both types to understand all them words i spewed out above.
reminds of when I was a kid, the best tractor was what our dad's had!!
by the way Rob that is a very nice looking Mohawk in your avatar.....
:bigsmyl:
Kohannah makes a nice longbow for the money as well. You will not deal with better folks than Vince at Mohawk or Bob at Kohannah. For the record my Mohawk was the quietest bow I have never heard. Plenty fast too. :goldtooth:
If you can get to a trditional shoot, there`s always venders that have bows for sell. They`ll let you try them out.Good way to get the feel of differant ones.I got a 49# Bob Lee t/d longbow. It has no hand shock at all.And shoots real nice.I`m still trying to get use to the lower #.My Super Kodiak that i had was alot faster. But then it was 6# heavier.Went down in # due to shoulder problems. But the Bob Lee t/d longbow is a good choice.
Bob Lee makes two great recurves. There's no way I could call a BL "longbow" a longbow. All he did was use the same recurve riser and reflex the limbs a tad less. It's more a hybrid than any bow out there. Sorry. Really. But I had to say it. :D Please note that I did say and mean that they are two great bows. :D
I almost said what Rob said but I hope he was joking when he said these posts might not be allowed. These "debates" are part of the fun and common in all sports. What's the harm? Don't read or post if you don't like them.
I like the traditional straight limb longbows by John McDonald "Big River" best with Steve Turay's Northern Mist longbows close behind.
I have shot the Mowhawk's, Liberty's, Dwyer's and others that have a little R/D to them with a bit wider and not quite as deep of limb core and they are nice too but I just prefer the narrow, deep core design of the more traditional designs.
Any Northern Mist LB, Steve builds 3 straight limb Hill style bows and 2 with a little R/D. I've got 3 of them, they are all pleasure to shoot.

it's (these kinda topics) not about 'harm', and it's surely nothing about debates.
it's about a subject that's subjective at best and all yer gonna get is second hand opinions and folks espousing what *they* think is good, better or best - but i've typed about all that a few posts ago.
the only redeeming notion is that subjective topics can be both amusing and a good way to waste time rapping about something to do with trad bowhunting. :D
I just like bragging about my Mohawk :p
Larry:
Are you, by chance, left-handed?
Mark
Mohawk!
I think I'll have to go ahead and vote for the Hill...

im right handed,,,and i just got back from the ctas high country shoot but did not find any hills or mohawks but i did shoot some nice longbows.while i was there.
mohawks are the best i have shot, very quiet, smooth, plenty fast, very forgiving.they love heavy arrows.seems to me they dont really live up to their potential until you load a heavy arrow on em then look out..my new one is 66" 60 @ 30 shoots a 650 grain arrow 165 fps which in my opinion is more than fast enough to down an elk and thats all i'm worried about.get two mohawks for the price of one of the higher end bows..ask me mohawk is the higher end. GREAT BOWS VINCE.
Sapphire Hawk is the smoothest fastest longbow I have ever had the pleasure of shooting....give him a look see. You will NOT be disappointed. Gotta be some reason you don't see used ones for sale all over the place
