Title: Time to pass it on.....the results,pg. 6!
Post by: Guru on July 11, 2009, 09:13:00 PM
That's right....it was time Cade to start making his own arrows.

Just like Joe Skipp passed the knowledge of making wood arrows on to me 22 yrs. ago, Cade and I both agreed it was time for him to try for himself.
I would show him every step and be there when he needed help. Of course some things were very awkward for him, but in time he's gonna be a heck of an arrow maker with a much earlier head-start than I had!

I can't remember why, but my bud Charlie Lamb sent Cade some seriously nice, very light spined cedar shafts....but I do remember him saying something to the effect of..." a boy has got to have good arrows to shoot"...Thanx bud

So let's get started....

We started out by deciding what color feathers he wanted. He decided he wanted 3 different colors and the brightest I had so they'd be easy to find at the Muzzy shoot. So 3 colors it was.

Counting them out......

Then I marked them at 4", and he cut them down...

He wanted them "pointy at the back", and that worked out good because with the low brace of his bow, a 4" feather would be better anyway....

From there we turned our attention to the shafts. Like I said these were primo cedars, so what little tweeking they needed to be straightened, I did with the ol' screwdriver technique. Then I cut them all on my table saw(didn't think he was ready for that yet     :scared:  ).

Then it was time for tapering. I just gotten one of those Bear's Paw taper tools from the St. Jude auction. By far the best hand taper tool I've ever used! Cade found it very easy to use as well.....

Seriously nice taper tool.....

a lot more to come......

Then he put the steel wool to them to really get them silky smooth.....

That done, we figured out how he wanted to stain them. He decided on an orange stain(like I said he wanted bright) and to leave the top 8" or so natural. So he marked a line on them to know where to stop the stain.....

Then he went to work...we used Rit dye with iso. alchohol...

All finished with the stain, and not bad at keeping them at the line...

When the stain was dry, it was time to put a coat of Minwax polycrylic. I like to get one coat on before any cresting. This is the part he had the most trouble with. I use a 1" foam brush to wipe on my poly and he had a hard time keeping the brush on the shaft as he made long even strokes. But he did try and will be better next time. If I used a dip tank, it would have been easier for him. But this is all I had so I helped him and did most of this step......(check out the new haircut)

Then it was time to get out the super, high tech cresting machine I've been using for 20yrs....but hey, it works! I've never been one for fancy cresting anyway. Put the nock taper on the hole in the wood at one end and the other rests in the v-notch on the other end....hand powered!

I showed him how I do it and he did a super job with his one line crest(my favorite too)....

more to follow....

Then his sidekick showed up to "help"....

I did 2 more coats of poly for him over the next couple days. When everything was dry, we were at it again.....

Next it was time to glue on the nocks. First I told him about how the nock should be oriented with the strong part of the grain,or perpendicular to the grain. Showed him how I hold the nock with the flat part up in one hand and spin the shaft to get the glue evenly around the taper and get the "points" or <<<<< >>>>>> look of the grain on top......

My beautiful daughter Emmie mae...she'll be making some soon too!

More tomorrow...time for UFC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Curt you got yourself a good looking crew of arrow-smiths there. Cade is getting down to business with that high & tight hair cut, following right in his dad's foot steps for sure.

glad you posted this thread, my nephew will be here at the end of the week and he and my son both have a dozen to make for Denton Hill.  They can just follow right a long with Cade. Tell Cade thanks for the build a long....

Shaun, You got it buddy, next year for St. Jude

Joe, I'll never be able to thank you enough buddy    :notworthy:

Whip, When I see them everyday it's hard to notice how they change sometimes. But when I start going thru some picture files, it's amazing how much they've grown up. Thank you!

thanx for all the kind words guys....with patience it's amazing how much they catch on....

on with the show.....

With the nocks glued and the Fletch-Tite Platinum given time to set up. I showed him how to load up the Jo-Jan multi fletcher. Making sure the indexers were all in the same spot and the nocks all the way into them......

Then I showed him how to load the feathers in the clamp, keeping them all on the line drawn to keep them even. Then how to run the glue and set the clamps and he went at it......

Over the next day or so he got them all glued on, then I just put a little dab of glue on the front and back of the feather quill.

More later.....

Thanx again fellas, I hope we can inspire some others to do the same. And I hope I'm explaining the steps good enough to get some guys started building wood arrows. If anyone has any questions, just ask.

Now it was time for one of the steps he was looking forward to...using the torch to glue on his points     :scared:      :(

Again, I showed him and helped a lot with this step, but tried to let him do as much as he wanted to. I watched closely and stayed close by.....

Showed him how to melt the glue stick and wipe some glue on the taper, then grab the  point with a pair of pliers...heat the point up and put it over the taper and pushing it on while spinning around a couple times to even out the glue and holding till the glue starts to cool off.....

He was a little tentative, and grabbing and holding with the pliers was something he hasn't done much of, but he did ok and got them done. He'd hand them to me and I'd get off the extra glue around the base of the point. We did 2 hex blunts, 2 judos, and 2 field points....

After the points cooled off he was quick to get them into his quiver and it was time for the fun part! Let's go shootin'!

Jonathan, She's so proud of those arrows. By far the nicest little kids arrows I've ever seen! Well maybe now Cade's are too    ;)    :goldtooth:    Thanx again for giving them to her bro!

The bow he's shooting was given to him by Hunterdfk's(David) son Hunter. It's an Ancient  Spirits Kiddie Kaddie.

Cade's got his own custom bow coming soon thanks to another very generous Trad Ganger, when it gets here this one will be going back to Hunter.
They said to keep it, but we want to give it back because it might really mean something to Hunter some day. Hopefully he can pass it down to his kids.

Thanks again everyone    :)

Those are some sharp looking arrows! I doubt Cade will need to be looking for them often, but the colors are about the same as the ones that I had made up for Mockingbird. He called them "unloseable", but he lost a couple anyway.
Good job, both of you!

Way to go Cade! Great looking arrows! Looks like Team Pink is well stocked.

It doesn't get any better than spending time with the kids. Jennifer, Jeff and I will be leaving next Thurs. for some big Florida gator bowfishing. Won't be long my friend and Cade will be dragging deer for you! It goes by WAY too fast!

Thanx guys

Well Charlie must have included some serious "mojo" in those shafts!  Last year was Cade's first Muzzy shoot and he had a great experience, but didn't shoot all that well.

But with his self made(with a little help from Dad), "Charlie Lamb" arrows, He went from tied for last place in '08, to 3rd place this year!!!!

He was fifth after Saturday, and made a late surge on Sunday to move up 2 spots to 3rd....need less to say he's on top of the world and me...well...let's just say I'm pretty proud of my little man!

Team Trad Gang.....

Cade lining up on a target with Muzzy's and TG's Mark Land looking on. He did an awesome job with the kids again this year!  Believe me...it's not easy to keep all those kids in control with bows and arrows!!  Thanks Mark!

See what happens when you leave your kid with someone else for a couple hours...

Cade those are some GOOD looking arrows. You did some fine work.

Curt your a great man. Those are memories that he will cherish and the many lessons that will mean so much. I hope one day I get the chance to hunt with you and Cade. I think that he could teach me something about good form. That picture of him shooting is awesome.
