Title: AMS reel ?
Post by: Lucas K on July 08, 2009, 12:34:00 PM
I am going to mount an AMS bowfishing reel on and older Martin Mamba and wanted to know how high (towards the fadeout) I can mount the reel without harming the integrity of the limb?
thanks Lucas

I'd stay down in the meaty part of the window, at least 1" wide.  Before you drill, make sure you don't have it mounted too high to reach the trigger without having to move your hand off the bow's grip.

Fletcher is right...mount the reel so that you can easily grip the trigger with the bowhand trigger finger.  This method is the most convenient for you and best for the bow.

Here's an AMS mounted on a Shakespeare Necedah. Notice the trigger at the top...

thanks guys, Lon do you have a picture of the other side of the bow, and did you use the spacer kit that came with the reel?

Lucas,

Here's the other side, mounted without the spacer kit. I just drilled, epoxyed an insert, and screwed it on using a little loctite to keep it snug.

I have used the setup for 10 years without any problems at all...but I've never caught any carp over 20#.

Thank you, looks great. Is that one of the inserts available from 3 Rivers or one from a hardware store?

I bought the inserts to mount my son's AMS at 3rivers, they are cheap and they work great.

Shakes, you can use a trad adapter that straps on the bow.

Yes, the adapter works great. I have one. Quick, easy, and mounts very secure.

I thought about drilling my Grizz, but couldn't bring myself to do it. I hand line all my fish in so I don't worry about movement, it's pretty solid anyhow.

Yes, I drilled the ole Shakespeare.  It was $10 at a garage sale a few years ago.  The bow's 52# and short length makes it a good carp bow, but I would use the adapter kit on more expensive bows.

I have been using the old wrap reels for years, I bought this Mamba just for bowfishing and I though I would make it as strong a joint as I could

thanks again

With all the slots in the AMS mounting bracket, I would just position the reel were it is comfortable for you to reach the trigger then mark the holes were you deem them safe for the bow then drill em

None of My Bows that I Plan to Use are "Million Dollar" Bows, I just cant  STAND  the thought of Drilling Holes in them!!  :scared:  They May not be worth too much to anyone else, but they are  ALL  Pretty Special to Me! It Sounds like the "Adapter" is  THE  Way to Go!!  :readit:

Shakes, they come with 130# Dacron line that is tough enough for any carp that swims.
