When you tune your arrow do you get better results by cutting the arrow to length and adding weight at the tip or shaft tuning? When I say shaft tuning I mean bare shaft, and cutting the arrow a little at a time until you obtain good arrow flight. Thanks
Here's what I think of arrow tuning. I'm gonna say it....and admit that I'm a trad "novice". Hopefully someone will set me straight if I'm wrong.
FIRST thing I'd do is figure out what size (grain) BH I wanted to use. Second, I'd take that into consideration in determinin proper spine. Next I'd start with a full length arrow. If it's too stiff (with the grain FP you wanna use) you're done. If it's too weak, you can start trimming.
Now...you CAN add brass weights in if you're too stiff (initially), but I've learned first-hand that they affect tuning more than just the amt. they weigh. An arrow with a 100gr. brass insert and a 100gr. field point will NOT react exactly like an arrow of identical weight/length (utilizing a heavier point) arrow. Weird, huh?
Lots of ways to skin a cat, but "I" like starting with the weight BH I wanna utilize.
I am pretty new to this, but I did learn a lesson with my first batch of arrows. Like Jeff said start with the broadhead you intend to use and go from there. I also thought I could bypass the arrow test kits, like from Three Rivers, but wouldn't do it again...each bow/shooter is different.
thanks guys i usually use the bare shaft method. I have been told that adding weights is a better way to tune an arrow. Just needing some input.
If the spine is weak you Can also built out your shelf until it flies right. Gary
Check out Stu Miller's calculator. You can plug in different weight/length variables to get theoretical impact on arrow spine.
