Which species would be required to get an archery "grand slam" on Squirrels?
I think you would have to take all of the color phases: grey, black, white and red. :)
yeah but how many different species are there. this could be a lifetime quest---I might not have that many years left.
I know here in Michigan we have Red, Grey, Black, and Fox squirrels.
Don't forget Rocky, I mean, flying squirrels. Are they legal game anywhere ? Do we need flu-flu's for them ?
ChuckC
Lots of Ground squirrels!
Don't forget the tufted eared squirrels of the mountain and desert states!
In Illinois we only have two legal tree squirrel sepies: fox and grey. There are pockets of "black squirrels," but they are actually a color phase of eastern grey squirrels -- kind of like how a chocolate bear is still a black bear.
here in colorado we have fox , pine, and abert's squirrels.
in arizona, they have the kiabab squirrel i think.
OK who will be the first to acheive this feat with trad equipment. Make certain you document your efforts well. Take plenty of photos. I see a book deal here and maybe even a movie.
Think of the industry backing.
Awesome !

We have the Delmarva Fox Squirrel, an easy target due to size but unfortunately PROTECTED.
Some of those Alberts squirrels are black, the others are kind of blue and white. I've bagged both of them. And I had a skin of a silver phase fox squirrel for many years until the museum bugs got it. But I shot them all with a .22, no fair I guess. I'm going to have to come out of retirement, and get some with the bow. I've probably did that too, just don't remember.

Do you know where we can find an anatomy chart for squirrels ?
I really hope they don't establish a male squirrel only season. That would make it tough.

I want one of those Albert's Squirrels in the WORST way. My next hunt in AZ is going to include of of those tufted eared beauties!
As long as we'er just talking about tree squirrels in the North America (north of Mexico) there are Eastern Gray, Western Gray, Arizona Gray, Eastern Fox, Apache (Mexican)Fox, and Abert's (Tasseled Ear)Squirrels that are full sized(More than a pound). many of these species have multiple color phases.

Love the way ya think!!! There was a squirrel slam contest(for fun) a year or two ago. I would be interested in doing that again! Also curious to see if chipmunks and ground squirrels are in there as well as the small Red squirrel and various color phases of the fox squirrel.
I feel so lucky, this last hunting season I got to shoot a huge Abert's out of the top of a pine tree while I was out stumping with my best friend.
He was jet black and had beautiful tassels/tufts on his ears probably an inch long.
I put him in the freezer and hope to get him mounted pretty soon.
shot him with a 125grn hammer sgh from 3 rivers.
one shot, dropped him like a rock!
Hey Wayne,
Where have you been? Haven't seen you here in a long time.
Great Idea! If Chipmunks are counted, I'm heading back to Colorado. I was there on an elk hunt a few years back and could have taken at least three Pope and Young chipmunks right outside my tent. The ones we have here in Maine looked like little mice in comparison.

I think the Abert's are protected here in Utah. Gary
So I was thinking about this the other day. I've bagged chipmunks, fox squirrels, red squirrels, and grey squirrels. So i think all I need is the black phase grey squirrel. A contest would be interesting...
Definately have to include the Kaibab and Aberts from each side of the Grand Canyon. Both are open during our archery deer seasons.
I have a choclate phase fox squirrel in my yard that has the fox brown tail but choclate brown body. Guess he would go in the non-typical category!
A brief reminder: Some of the smaller ones are also protected. Here in AZ read the Mount Graham red squirrel. They only have 250 pairs or so left.
