Title: Abowyer, anybody use em? how sharp
Post by: elkbreath on June 27, 2009, 02:25:00 AM
Likely going to be ordering some brown bear heads.  Could some give me an honest take on how sharp these come in to my door?  I've read very sharp and not sharp...so give me your standards of sharp too.

Anybody have any reviews on these heads I could hear?  I like the ratio, the teflon too.  Also the tip looks to  be pointed instead of a solid single bevel to the end, which I like.  Does the teflon have any issues gluing up to a steel adapter?

Thanks for lettin me bend your ear for a minute.
Its between these and snuffers/woodsman this year.  I just gotta get em sharp!

I have only used these heads glued to wood-no adapters-hot melt works perfect. The tip is more of a Tanto point than a pointy one.
As to sharpness: I have received 24 of these heads maybe a few more. They have all arrived  shaving sharp; they can be made even sharper by stropping. Personally I have given them a few strokes on a fine steel plate and that makes them scalpel sharp.
I will add that the bevel is beautifully done; lots of surface and likely about 20 degree bevel.
The ratio is very close to 3:1.

I've only bought 6 of the Abowyers.  When I pulled off the protective coating, it was very apparent why it was there...SHARP!

Once you hold these babies in your hands you will wonder why anybody would ever use another 2 blade.  They just reek quality.

I ordered some of the large bone heads back in late winter, early spring. like said above, the bevel is very nice, but they weren't shaving sharp when I got them. Are they teflon coated? A good bit of the paint wore of mine just getting them tuned, I was shooting them into a rhinhart 18-1 target. But don't take this as a slam, they are a well made heavy head.

Yes, they are well made. Yes, they come pretty sharp and with just a little work on a fine stone and some stropping they get real sharp. Love the dimensions of them. Great heads!

I agreed 100% Steve.  My dad and I ordered some Brown Bears a month or so ago and they shaved hair out of the package.  I would recommend hitting them lightly with a fine stone or diamond to get them REALLY sharp.  Currently they have a 25 degree bevel and are painted but in talking with Dan at length last week he said a teflon coating is being considered as well.  We have also been abusing the heads as best we can.  We have shot them repeatedly into a doubled over license plate, into the dirt (intentionally) and stuck them into trees with not even a hint of a problem.  The heads are of the best quality you will find anywhere and I can't speak highly enough of them.  You won't be dissapointed.  Good luck with them this year!

Are you touching them up pushing toward the edge or away on the stone?  I have a KME knife sharpener regular stone kit.

update, just got a few more large boneheads and they are sharp, a little stropping and you'd be good to go. and it does look like these are teflon coated.

I just mounted three Antelope on some cedar shafts and have three more ready to put on. I shot the first three and after that I decided they will be going to Wyoming in about a four weeks to do some work on some antelope. They are very sharp out of the package and fly great out of my setup.
I like em!

Mine were NOT "shaving sharp" or even midly sharp; however, it didn't take long with my Lansky to get them there.

Didn't take me long with my MOAB to KILL something with one.

I'd seen the prototypes of the new models that were different than the original I bought 8 years ago or so....and when they came out I order some of the WIDE ones cause they were built like tanks and I like WIDE head damage.  Anyway, I told Larry I would try and get a hog with one for him soon as I could....next weekend I did in the Cohutta Wilderness.

Manitoba, June 2009, Wapiti head, complete pass through-buried 10" in the ground, 15 Yard recovery, massive blood trail. Best heads on the marker for the money, IMHO.

Haven't hunted them yet, but I have purchased the Wapiti (by Abowyer) head for this year's big game hunts...including moose.

I was able to get mine shaving sharp with just a light (!) filing and steeling. I also tried free-handing them on an extra-fine diamond hone and was able to get them extremely and dangerously sharp. A leather strop would probably make them almost illegal to own...

I shot a big scrub bull in Oz with one and was more than satisfied . They came sharp enough to hunt with and are easy to touch up . I used the Brown bear model which are 175 grains and they performed very well , might be my new favorites , Fred

Hi Fred      :wavey:

That's the kind of animal that I'd use the brown bear on.

Congrats sir & hope to see you in camp again soon.    :campfire:
