Title: This years hunting bows.
Post by: Mike Yancey on June 22, 2009, 09:42:00 PM
These are the bows that I have made for me and my hunting buddy  to use this year in WY. They are osage with antelope sinew  and rawhide backing from antelope the two of us have taken over the last few years. They are 52 and 54" long and in the 50# range.

I spent a week back in Jan. with Ed and had a blast. We built bows all week long for 12-14 hours a day and never got tired of it. The form I used to make these is a copy of Ed's bush bow style. I then tiller them more plains style and shape the handles my style. The next ones I make I'm going down the limb a little farther with the width.
I shipped Jerry his bow today and he should have it there in WY by Thursday. I made the string for it and shot it in before I shipped it and it is as quite as any bow out there. I made the string out of Fast Flight and no silencers. I haven't told him that I shipped it so he will be surprised when the UPS man comes to his house.

Mike,

Where did you get the idea for the designs?  I have an old (came into my family about 1920 or so) 48" bow, made of unbacked juniper, I think.  It has similar designs on the belly (the back is too faded to see the designs). It even has a small piece of the rawhide string atatched.

Your bows are stunning, by the way.

Highnoonhunter, thank you for putting that on for me I can't get it to work for me. DWMWMB, I am in Van Buren right on the OK. line and no son named Justin.
Phil that is a neat bow and no doubt the real deal. I got the idea for the art work on mine from a bow that Ed Scott and I built in NM. back in Ja.
I just found out today that I drew mule deer and antelope tags in WY so I will be there the 15th of August for a week for the antelope then again the first full week in Sep. for the deer. I busted it up this year to try and kill bigger animals and to enjoy the trip more. Its hard on my hunting buddy to hit it as hard as I like to do so the break between the two will let him get over the antelope before we start in on the mule deer.

The antelope mojo is right. I have been wanting to build these bows ever since the first trip I took to Wyoming and have just now done it. They are special to me for sure.

Dang, Mike, I missed this thread while I was off bear huntin'.  Those are some really sharp bows, glad you're gettin' two full weeks to chase the critters....

TradGangers, here's one of Mike's GhostDancers that he's building for me;  sinew-backed Osage w/ Prairie Rattler:
