Last night I was feeling antsy. I went through my hunting pack and made certain that everything was there. I made a mental list of things that need fixing and repaired. I went and Sharpened a few broadheads. Is September here yet?

Brian, don't take for granted any time the Lord gives us. Waiting for September can cause one to not notice the time between...that would be a silly error. Get yourself in the woods and shoot some stumps; hunt gophers or whatever else is in those North Carolina woods. Don't "wait" for something that possibly could never come 8^).

If only I could get that imprinted somehow into my sons so they don't "learn" it late in life like I have.
What a life a person could have if they started when young and able to use their time better.
I'm still guilty of wasting so much time, so many excuses.

Getting old has some advantages, if you get there, but.....you WILL regret NOT doing things while you can.
As friends pass on, I find more and more time to spend with those left and time flies so fast.
Just realized this past weekend it had be TWENTY YEARS since a friend and I had went bowfishing or fishing in general together.

The hunting season has me thinking of the head's I never used, bows I never hunted with or never had and wanted.
Not to collect but to hunt God's creation He has given us.
More plans. Just traded for a 66 K mag. Never hunted with a maggie but remember DROOLING over them in the hardware that year!!!

The "young set" who grew up with a computor could learn SO MUCH, SO FAST. Wow!
BUT......back on subject. It is indeed a time odd for me, for more ways than one.

It's good to be proactive with your hunting preparations (or fishing, or camping, etc.). Unfortunately I must make hard copy notes on paper because the mental notes would go POOF by the next day.
I do make lists when I go on a hunting, fishing, camping trips and include every last little item to be safe. It's a good habit to develope.
George, you nailed it. Seize the day and seize the moment within the day. You never know when the Reaper will come a knockin'. As a soldier in combat and a career cop, I learned that lesson all too well. And a really good thing about stump shooting is that you don't have gutpiles at the end of the day.
It is great to dream of the times you love and to prepare for it. That can be as fun, or more (I shoot a lot more deer in my daydreams than I do in actual practice) than the actual event. But as the others have said it is vital to cherish the time of now.
Sometimes getting ready is half the fun. Nice time to reflect back on past hunts and get ready for future hunts. If you fail to plan you plan to fail. 100 days till deer season here.
WestTN you are right. I remember fondly the days when planning ang preparing for the hunt was a HUGE part of the joys I had. Not being able to sleep in the tent the night before, tree stand in place, spot chosen, trail well scouted. Sharpening broadheads. Talking, more talking. It was midnight and we still were too psyched to sleep. I also hope some of the younger folk read this and pay heed.
Now, I seem to place too much time into my work at the expense of me and my dreams.
I am now almost retired, I now have a bit more money salted away, the nest is empty, but I am no longer a pup. The dream of chasing a mtn goat, or some other game is probably gonna stay a dream, mainly cause I don't think I can do that too well any more, physically.
I lost or will soon have lost the real ability to live that one dream. How many more will slip away just because I didn't act on them.
Sure, I have done some things, but there are SO MANY more that I just didn't do.
If you can do it without hurting your family life, go. I wish I did.

I used to get that itch about two days after our spring turkey season closed. June to September felt like an eternity. If you have lots of spare time make a selfbow or some such thing. If you don't, take a couple minutes out of a day and listen to the wind, feel the sun on your face and thank the Lord for just one more day. Some won't have that luxury
Getting ready IS half the fun.
Sharpening broadheads for example...when I sharpen broadheads, I am of course, being carefull, but I am lost in thought to a bloodtrail, or a stand off with an alerted deer, or the minds eye recall of a passthru arrow.
There is a confidence that comes with getting ready way in advance. I "wish away" summer, but I also take in every moment.
I notice the first cool breeze in August. I notice the first red leaves on the Maples. I watch the apples swell.
Brian says he was feeling "antsy". I bet he has HAS BEEN feeling "antsy" and just noticed how antsy. "Antsy" is good. It keeps you as sharp as the edge of your broadheads.
