Title: Hissssssssss....THWACK! Instant bow backing.
Post by: JC on June 13, 2009, 01:15:00 PM
I took a few minutes this morning before our baseball games started to shoot a few arrows. I've just got a couple doz new shafts and started the tuning process so I carried a pile down to one the dirt mounds in my pasture where I always bareshaft. Things were going well, I was narrowing down the answers and I hear the dogs barking over in the brush. Normally, I don't pay them any mind because being game lil suckers, they are constantly draggin up some varmint of some kind (don't ask how many skunks).

I was absorbed in shooting till I hear Porkchop yelp and see all four go into a frenzied dance in a ragged circle given what-for to the center. I walked over and shooed them away only to find....Mister No-shoulders. I had my normal arrows in my quiver...first shot nicked the left of his head which kinda irritated him a bit...second shot was a mite closer and ended the drama.

None too amused....

Boy, them Hammers shore do cut a bloody swath!

The business end...

He was hit 4 times on the nose, touch and go for the first hour; he's only 25# so it really did a number on him.

Thankfully, being horse folk, we've got a bottle of about every kind of serum a feller can get his hands on. A super dose of penecillin, a butt full of banamine and he's come around with only some swelling and glands the size of golf balls to show for it.

Thought for the day: If you've got dogs (or kids) with more heart than good sense, keep yer undergrowth cut short. This is the second, and worse, bite Porkchop's had from coppersnakes...you'd think he'd be smart enough by now! Oh yeah, when you screw a Hammer on the end of yer arra, don't don't point it at anything you don't want to tear up.     :scared:

Watch where yer steppin boys...they're out and about thick this year.

Yep...I notice every time there's a rabbit bloom the snakes really get thick..so this year ought to be a doozy for coppermouth waterrattlers, Joe!

Nice shootin, TEX!

We sure missed ya down South last weekend....but ya got an invite when you want to go.

Sure glad Porkie's OK.

Each of my dogs have been bit a few times by copperheads over the last few years. We don't see many rattlers up here and no poison water snakes but plenty of copperheads. It always seems to be after vet hours when they get bit so we take care of them until we can get to the vet for an antibiotic.
Less than half of the bites have been "hot" but the dogs suffer a bit anyway. The neck swelling is the poison collecting in the fatty tissue around the dogs neck. I guess they developed that over the eons because they are always sticking their heads where they shouldn't.
My choc lab, Lucy Brown, now has a "snake bark" that she sounds when she sees or smells a snake. After 2 hot bites and a few not hot ones, she has learned......somewhat!

Brother Joe,
How close was that sucker to Uncle Sammy's tent when we were down a few weeks back ? Sure would have hated to walked up on him during the pre-dawn Indian Alarm clock run draining my main !!!   :scared:

Glad to hear your pup's gonna be OK.
We live near a wet weather swamp/creek, and on what they call "rattlesnake ridge".  We've lost several dogs to rattlers.  Mocasions seem to make 'em swell up, but are usually not fatal.
My best to Porkchop.

Here's hoping your four legged friend makes a full, and complete recovery.

I just hate seeing hurt/injured dogs.

Guess I am a little weird, as I prefer the company of dogs to that of most people. (The dog's are a lot more honest.)

Glad everybody's okay Joe. Just send the snakeskin to me and I'll make you a bow quiver you will be able to bond with. Course porkchop might get offended.

In some remote areas; snake bites ( which might not be identified as to the type of snake) are treated with benadryl (sp) and vitamin C.

I did this with my snake bit dog; and he quickly turned the swelling into retreat.

There is a shot that you give your dog at the start of the year to give it some immunity too.

 Nice shot.

Yep I knew PorkChop was a good'n. Glad Miss Kim has that medicine cabinet full, purty snake though...

Something you might want to think about is I've started giving a rattlesnake vacine to our "jump right in the middle" Jack Russels every spring. Don't know why it wouldn't work on copperheads too, both a protein based poison I think. To my knowledge it hasn't been tested yet but with all the rattlers we've got it might make the difference some day...

Oh Jesus. I hope that your dog will get well again. I have two myself, and wouldn't approve of any snake biting them! And as we can see, you didn't either. Fine headshot  :D

Gotta hate the pooch is feeling the worst end of a "bow backing". as long as there is AL-200 and penacilin (The fix all fer me) he should be fine. had a pitbull that always needed a shot one week or another, and benadryl dont hurt. good shootin and way to put the hammer to`em.

I`m glad your dog is ok...

I`m indifferent to snakes, I let them pass, but here where I`m at, they just put up a good fake.
Very, very few of them have fangs here in Michigan.

I`ll say again...I`m glad your dog is ok.
