Title: RW or LW feathers?????????
Post by: fountain on June 08, 2009, 04:42:00 PM
first off i am right handed.  when we started getting serious in the trad. scene i was seeing that others recommended lw feathers for right handed shooters.  i have had several different opinions in the last few days and want to hear more input from others and reasoning behind them.  is there any difference and will it make a difference in what feather hand i shoot?

It really does not matter,
Some shoot RW because it keeps the points from loosening.
Some right handed shooter shoot LW because they claim better shelf clearance.
Some stay with whatever fletcher they have.

You could go on and on, but in the end it's just a personal thing.

I shoot and hunt with both; just depends on which feathers I can get my hands on.  I find that sometimes if an arrow does not fly quite right I'll change the fletching from one wing to the other and it'll straighten up.

I shoot bow's that have the shelf's cut "very low" to the hand. Shoot left wing. Whenever I've tried to shoot right wight I tear my bowhand up.

I agree that it really doesn't matter.  I do however, just keep one style in my quiver at a time.....probably due to paranoia.   :-)

right wing.I use right single bevel heads, and its easier for a righty to sharpen right bevel broadheads at least for me.

Like said it really doesn't matter,I'm RH and shoot both. With most arrows these days have tunable nocks,I just rotate for the best clearence. On my arrows with glue-on nocks when I shot RW I would shoot cock feather in for best clearence and cock feather out for LW.Just my preference.

No difference except match the bevels on single bevel BH.

well i shoot double bevel heads, so i guess it really dont matter what i shoot then.  guess there really are no rules in traditional archery--just guidelines and you follow what workd best for you.
thanks for the replies

I have some of both and can tell no difference in performance. Coming off of my bow string, they are all equally bad.

"No difference except match the bevels on single bevel BH."

"i am with Bjorn no difference but do match the bevels on single bevel broadheads"

I shot Grizzlies for years and never thought about matching the fletching to the bevel.  I sure can see the logic behind that line of thinking however, but I personally won't worry about it too much since grizzlies always seemed to go  through the animal and stick in the dirt.
