We live in a rural area of Northern Kentucky, and we like to feed the birds in the summer. Unfortunately we get our fair share of Ground Squirrels that get around the "Squirrel-Proof" bird feeder as they are as light or lighter than the birds and don't close the trap on the feed when they stand on it...
Anyway, they deplete the food rapidly, and even worse dig their burrows in the yard. My wife went on a mission a couple months ago to rid the yard of these dangerous beasts. Before we started I asked if I could just shoot them to reduce their population? She laughed at me... Well OK, we'll do it your way sweetie...
So, many $'s later and numberous different methods of trying to rid our yard of them (with poor results btw...) she said why don't you try to shoot some of them to give us a leg up, at least you'll scare them a bit...
So, yesterday I walk up to the bow rack and try to choose a weapon that will bring down one of these beasts. Looked them all over and chose my Shawnee, 64# @ 29". I know it's a bit light for such a beast but I like living on the edge. ;)
I slowly crept into their habitat, and the arrows started flying. 5 shots in all and two dead Chipmunks. Plus we didn't see anymore out and about yesterday... Today I saw one doing his thing (transporting food underground...) so I grab my trusty Shawnee and wade into the battle again... missed him charging me at 12 yards but turned him and he ran out to 18 yards or so and stopped to ready himself for another charge. Took him in the head with a well placed Gold Tip!
So, if you're up to the challenge, give the these beasts a try but be careful this isn't for the timid! :biglaugh:

Thanks for the great read!

Sounds harrowing but, also sounds like a good time and a good way to keep your skills sharp. Stay safe and shoot straight.

I will agree, They are tough but remember, "Aim Small, Miss Small."

The skanky little rodents are protected in Pennsylvania...chipmunks that is. I guess we are down to our last billion or so.
-
Man George, that stinks! Chipmunks are my favorite "unprotected" small game, next to the neighbors wild barn cats! Good shootin, Steve
-
George,
Sometimes the stump I'm shooting at just happens to have a chipmunk sitting on it. And sometimes I shoot high. :)
PA munk, er, stump hunter. Yeah, that's it, stump hunter.

Each to his own I guess. I enjoy watching them myself.... I always felt guilty when I kill something I can't us though.

I believe chipmunks and ground squirrels are two different animals
"Sometimes the chipmunk is confused with another ground squirrel, the thirteen-lined ground squirrel (also called "striped gopher"). The thirteen-lined ground squirrel is yellowish, lacks the facial stripes, and the tail is not as bushy as the chipmunk's. And, as this squirrel's name implies, it possesses 13 stripes extending from the shoulder to the tail on each side and back. When startled a ground squirrel carries the tail horizontally along the ground; the chipmunk carries the tail upright. "

I hate chipmunks! They reak havoc in my yard...Ill play along with this one.

The little darlings did 600.00 worth of damage to the wiring harness in my car. I prefer PDP small game points. Bill

I have the same problem in my yard. They are in the landscaping, under the driveway and under the barn. They are everywhere. I have shoot at four or five with the bow. Usually when they are running for a hole near my practice area. Close, but nothing yet with the bow. If they were rabbit size I would have gotten some. Most are on hard surface stuff so if I try some shots I risk damaging a lot of arrows. However, m pellet gun count is 19. I am just staring to see noticeable reductions.
