Title: Arizona and arrow heads
Post by: xroadshunter on June 07, 2009, 09:36:00 AM
I'm taking the family to AZ and was wondering where I might be able to take the kids searching for arrow heads. We'll be staying in the Sedona area and making a side trip to the Grand Canyon.

I believe the only places you are able to pick up arrowheads is on private land. It is my understanding it is illegal to hunt them on public lands. That might limit your places.

George
Are your kids young?

Buy cheap ones and hide them for your kids, not breaking any laws and your kids "find" treasure.

For us it was Metal detectors and pennies lol

I used to live in Sedona. The area has pretty well been scoured through every square inch over the last 20 years. There used to be lots of artifacts before things went commercial. I was back in Sedona last year and went for a walk into numerous old artifact sites I knew of. I did find a few beads in the ant mounds on the mesas. Of course I left them on the Mesa because it is a federal offense to remove any artifact from any public piece of property. Enjoy your trip. It;s a beautiful place to visit. CK

Most of the arrow heads I found were around Page, Ashfork and east of Winona. A friend was working on pottery around Winona , old camp sites just prior from cancer taking him away. Walnut Canyon Park may be a good place to stop just east of Flagstaff.  Sedona, well, sure is a bunch of people hiking around down there.  After a good rain is when I find them on flat ground. The cliffs around the Verde River, south of Sedona has lots of chip piles.  Pretty hot and bunch of snakes now.  Bring a fly rod, fishing on the creek has been good.  We have a shoot the 13th & 14th-June.  Have a good vacation!

Thanks for the info...I'll make sure to check the rules don't want to end up looking for bail money instead.  Gold panning is an option, my oldest caught that fever.
