Title: Cleaning my bow
Post by: Trad Lad on June 02, 2009, 07:09:00 PM
What is a good thing to clean my bow with. Something the will just take the gunk off and make it look new again. My bows are in great shape just dirty. Looking for something that is oderless and probably not a wax.
Thanks.

I've used spray furniture wax on mine for years. I do spray it on a rag and not the bow. String wax and other grime comes right off.

I've used mild soap and water or sometimes windex glass cleaner.  I wax them after cleaning.

I've had good experiences with Flitz metal polish (says it is good for fiberglass on the package).  Mildly abrasive, cleaned off the grime, dirt, and tape residue of a few old bows.

I understand the BowDoc makes something that works really well also, but I've not been able to lay my hands on any yet.

I've been using a liquid polish/cleaner made by bowdoc.  Great for removing gummy build-up, plus smoothing out minor scuff marks.  The owner/seller is a TradGang member, I believe.  You can reach him at bowdocsarchery@comcast.net. That's the latest address I have for him.

I've been advised to use alcohol (93% methylated ethanol), and it really helped removing some bad wax I had used. Also made the bow shine out the clearer  :)

I have always used good old Pledge.  Spray some on a rag and wipe it down.

Wow.  You guys clean your bows?  Actually, I just wipe it down now and then with a damp rag.

nail polish remover is good for stubborn dirt or sticky stuff, finish with pledge, makes it look better than new.

Depends on what "gunk" is. If we are talking tape reside a safe starting point is charcol starter (which is a solvent) After wiped down with charcol starter I wipe the entire bow down with a baby wipe. Once that is done I use just regular old toothpaste (the old white paste type not gel!) and a damp towel I go over the entire bow. Wipe down with clean damp cloth. Again with baby wipe. OPTION: Using regular old car paste wax you can get a nice protective shine.  Good Luck  John

If I'm feeling particularly anal, I spray some orange furniture polish on my bows.  It cleans gunk off really well and puts a nice sheen on the finish that lasts a long time.  Plus it helps keep moisture off.  They look so beautiful I don't want to take them out for fear of getting 'em dirty - NOT!

However you go about it, just make sure it isn't loaded first.  :bigsmyl:
