I'm wondering what the legal draw weight limits are in different states, particularly those with good pig populations. Here in WA, it's 40# for "Big Game". I don't know that we have feral hogs. I've heard there there might be a few, but certainly not the huntable populations we hear of down South.
Any info on draw weight limits, tag requirements, etc. would be appreciated. It's probably just a dream on my part, but the possibility of getting a pig with Howard's bow or one I made myself sure sticks in my mind...
In New York state your bow has to be above 35# for big game. Not a lot of pigs there are supposed to be some, I have talked to people who have seen them, but a waist of time to come here to hunt them at the present time.
Ky used to have a 35# limit I believe , but they dropped that long ago. Very few pigs here in KY.
You guys are a big help! Nice weight limits, but no pigs... :^) Actually, I'm glad see those 35# limits... that would put me in the game. Now, if I could just combine that with somewhere that the piggies are trained to trot into camp...
Oregon is 40# for deer, 50# for elk.
Many states consider pigs to be non-game, or small game and have little in restrictions.
Good luck. GA used to be #45 for big game but I think they re-wrote it to mention other stats as a determining factor.
Dick, I'm not 100% but, seems like I heard there were some wild pig populations in Southern Oregon/Northern California. Might check with MikeG to confirm.
Alabama is 35#. Pigs are kinda game and kinda pests. No night hunting, no baiting. No closed season, no bag limit. Bill
California: 'Cast a legal hunting arrow 130 yards parallel to the ground' whatever the heck that really means.
BH can't pass thru a 7/8" hole. Hunt them during daylight hours 365 days a year.
parallel to the ground!!!??? I can't make a big enough smiley face! Did the guy who wrote that rule ever shoot anything? BB gun, slingshot, rifle? Let's see... who's gonna be first to design a traditional laser bow....
Indiana is 35# but like other states mentioned, has few if any pigs.
I think Texas, a huge pig population, use to be 45# but I don't think that is the case any longer. If memory serves there is now no minimum draw weight given. Just google Texas's hunting regulations. I did that about 6 months ago for several states and had no trouble finding the information.
Quotewho's gonna be first to design a traditional laser bow
Now that's funnier than all get out!! :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
IL 40#'s
In Virginia we do not have a weight limit, but you have to be able to shoot any arrow in your possesion 125 yards. Though I have never heard of anyone being checked. It would entail quite a bit of work to enforce.
Jack
Ohio is 40# for every thing
Here in Louisiana we have no shortage of pigs. We have a 30 lb. minimum to bowhunt. I live on the border of a game reserve that is overrun with hogs. I'm still waiting for my first one with trad tackle, but here is a pic of a boar that fell to my rifle two seasons ago. I like to put a camera out over some corn during deer season to see what kinda bucks I have lurking behind the house. This guy was helping himself late one night. I think I took him a week later about a half-mile behind the house.

40lb stickbow and 35 compound here in NC.
Forgot to mention that photo was in my back yard, about 100 yards from my porch. While it is legal to hunt over bait on private land here, it is illegal to bait on the game reserve.
As far as I know Mississippi does not have a weight limit on bows. The National Wildlife Refuge about five miles from my house is over run with the critters. I believe that a non-resident hunting license is required, plus the $12.50 refuge permit. You might search the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks for the specifi information that could answer your questions in particular. Even though hogs are plentiful here they are still very difficult to hunt in the delta. If you hunt the refuge here you will have to learn to dance the cottonmouth two step and the rattler twist. The hogs here stay in the heavy cover, but in the fall with the heat being what it is, is is best to scout the waterholes. Don't know if this helps but it's my two cents.
TX now has no weight limit and hog is considered a pest and can be killed any time, any way on private land.
Texas used to have a 40# minimum, but no more. There is no poundage limit now for Texas. Texas has a huge population of feral hogs.
Dick, you need to move and come to Texas. BTW, I have a 35# bow on order and besides feral hogs, we have javelina. You need to hunt them.
Texas - no draw weight restrictions (they had a 40# weight limit until this year and TPWD did away with it). Also there are literally tons of pigs here. Come on down and shoot a few.
Bisch
Nv States.
Must be capable of sending a 400 grn arrow of a minimum of 24" long,150 yrds.Doesnt state you must hunt with that 400 grn arrow, but it must be able to send it that far.Ive done it with a 40 lb recurve and a 450 grn arrow.Actually i surpassed it,so im convinced, that a 35 lber would do it.
Oh,And the rumor is,there are hogs in Paradise valley area, but access is tough to get.LOL
Here in Jersey the minimum is #35 lbs we have a few pigs down in the southern portion of the state that you can hunt but i think fish and game is trying to really limit if not remove that population before they grow and spread out
Used to be a weight restriction (40 lbs.) in TN, but the current guide says, no pod arrows, must use a sharpened head, everything else is legal.
Nebraska 40lbs at or before 28".
35# in Pennsylvania. Most pigs are around the cities 8^).
35# in Indiana,,,but I think that just applies to deer.
NYS guys, just a tech bit of information, the bow needs to be 36#'s, 35#'s is unlawful.
So, technically, you need to mark the bow 36# and you will be fine 8^).
George, what does your emoticon mean? I know 8 is wide eyed, and ) is happy, but not sure of the rest.
And yes, I think you have your statement correct. :-)
Utah is 40lbs. at the draw or peak which ever comes first. Gary
Many thanks, guys.... Obviously a number of states with no restrictions or below 40#... and the piggies mostly oink with a Southren' drawl. I can handle those weights, even up to 45 if I recover a bit more. Now, whether I could really handle hunting is another question. I'll see how I do out stump shooting this summer and then maybe plan for something in the winter or spring if I think I can handle it. I really appreciate all the info. Hope other folks found it useful or interesting as well.
35# Louisiana...
In AK, the limit is 50# for Moose and Brown Bear, #40 for all other 'big game', and unless I am mistaken, there is no set limit for small game.
Nate
It's just a smiley face Bob. A guy lying on his back laughing I suppose....or just rearing his head back 8^)))))).
I see him now George!
