Title: Saving wing feathers
Post by: xtrema312 on May 31, 2009, 09:27:00 PM
I am going to start saving wing feathers.  I shoot some geese every year, and I got a full set of turkey feathers saved from this year.  I typically save a goose wing feather just to keep a count so I have some now, but I want to save up more this fall.  I don't know that I would ever use them, but I can't see them going to waste is someone can use them.  How many of the feathers are usable for arrow making on each bird, and how do I tell what is a keeper and what is too small to use?  I don't want to save up a bunch of them that no one can use.

Same as on a turkey, the primaries.  That's the 8-9 feathers furthermost out on the wing.  Secondaries can also be used, but they're not as stiff.

Todd, if you ever have more than you need, keep me in mind, please. I'm not picky, I will use lesser types for flu-flus or small game arrows. Good shootin, Steve

Thanks for the info.  I will save all the ones I can as long as there is use for them.

You can use a vacuum seal a meal to store them.  It takes less room and you don't have to worry about bugs.
