Title: Hagerman NWR Archery Hunt
Post by: Toklat1 on May 30, 2009, 09:51:00 PM
Have any of you ever drawn out (or known someone who has) for the Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge Archery only hunt in North Texas. If so, what is that proficency test all about? Do they make you take the same shots at the same distances as all the Non-traditional archers? Wouldn't seem quite fair to me!

Mark, Ive been drawn and yes the proficency test is the same for everyone.  The test is no gimme either.  Shots out to just under 30yds on 3d targets.  Worth it in my opinion if you get drawn.

I've been drawn in the past and hope to again for this coming season.

Denton County Archers & Collin County Bowhunters might have a more "trad-friendly" proficency test. You can also have a 3D score card "certified" at many shoots.

I can't seem to edit my previous post?

The guidelines for the test are 14 (deer sized) targets, 30 yards or less, standard IBO corse, scoring 10-8-5-0, 89% or a minimum score of 112 to qualify.

You don't shoot the test at Hagerman but rather anytime before you get there at the club of your choice with someone with you authorized to sign your card.

Many clubs in DFW area will have qualifiers between now & then.

Should be 80% above not 89%...but again, can't edit it?

I have hunted Hagerman on several occasions.  I grew up in Sherman.  The test is challenging with a stickbow.  80% kills on 3d course.  Huge bucks in this refuge.  I grew up in Sherman, spent time at Hagerman all my younger years growing up.  Watching eagles, geese and photographing wildlife with my dad.  I also built a photo blind for my eagle scout project on one of the ponds there at the refuge.  I believe it was destoyed when the lake went over the spillway.  Look at the regulations for the deadline on submission of application and the window for qualifiaction.  Donnie Ooten used to run a 3-D range right on the edge of the refuge, refuge road archery.  he used to run qualifing events, he set reasonable shots at hunt distance.  Might look him up, would be a Pottsboro address I think.  it depends on where you shoot the qualifiaction about the difficulty.
