I am trying to tune some Sitka Grizzly pre fletched arrows. I think my best flight is cut to 28"s with a 125 grain head. This give me 475 grains with field tip. I am new to traditional but not to archery. My compound set up shot thru my chronograph puts out a 397 grain arrow @ 61#s of energy. My Longbow puts a 475 grain arrow (tried different tip weights up to 300 gr) 161 fps avgerage and about 27 pounds of energy.
Is my set up enough to harvest an Elk inside 30 yards? "Or" Should I try to add weight to the back of the arrow to allow more tip weight. I'm sorry if my terms are incorrect but just getting stsrted in this.

for elk, i would go for at least 10 grains per bow poundage. ie. your 60# should be shooting at least a 600 grain arrow. longer arrow, heavier broadheads, or even better a heavier wooden arrow would be a start. speed is important, but not as much as most people think. kinetic energy is most important. there is a formula you can use. in a very simple explanation, a very fast flying ping pong ball will not hurt as much as a not so fast golf ball. :-)

I'm sorry for the misunderstanding my COMPOUND puts out 61#s of energy. I was just comparing the difference 61#s versus 27#s for the longbow (475 grains @ 161 feet per second = 27.1 foot pounds of energy).
My bow ia 64" Lewis Hallow Longbow (I purchase from a member)marked 51# @ 28" ... My draw length is about 26.75 I think at my draw length I am pulling 46#s. I shot over the cronograph today @ 161 fps with 475 gr for the 27#s of energy. I can't seem to get the heavier heades to fly (100, 125, 145, 175, 200, 300)

Coaster; Read up on tuning arrows. The grizzly stiks are hard to tune compared to straight shafts. Be sure to confirm w head weight before cutting your shafts, for the poundage you are pulling the length sounds short. DON"T cut the back end and don't add weight to the back end. You'll be alot happier if you take the time to tune them proerly, (better perfomance, etc.)

I guess that these Sitka Grizzlys are not going to work for my bow. None of the above weights seem to fly very well. Only the 125s are consistent. Thank goodness I only bought 6. The worst flight seems to be at 145 gr. I get good flight with my woody's @ 535 grains but they do not penetrate as deep as the Sitkas?
Back to the drawing board.......
