In relation to this topic; http://tradgang.com/noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=074491;p=1 which caught my interest, I figured... why not create a topic for people with heavy bows to post pictures, videos etc.
If anyone else is interested, that is :archer:
I love my 82# Hill. Pbucket confuses me or I'd post. Get Marlon to post a pic of his 290# Krippelmacher!
I have Straitera post some pictures. Marlon
What's the weight limit to enter?
What's the weight limit to enter? :)
Uh oh... shall we say 70# and above? That won't rule too many out :)
I cant pull a heavy bow but I saw a hunter pull both my bow and my friends bow back at the same time. Mine was a 55 pounder and his was a 60 pound bow. He also strung a 100 pound longbow and pulled it back and held it.
I shoot a Frank SanMarco longbow 80# @28" and have a horn bow ordered from Lukas at Saluki bows it will be around 80# @30" . A bit longer draw on it as it will be shot with a thumb ring.
Oberon
Whats a thumb ring
Oberon: I ordered a custom bow from Lukas too, 70# @ 30". Plan to use a thumb ring for that one too.
Mine's not a hornbow though, but I'm definetely getting one at some point in my life :)
A thumbring is a ring worn on the thumb and is used instead of a three finger release.
It is widely used on Asian style bows or the so called horse bows.
I will try and post a photo of one that I carved from some aluminum-bronze.
Oberon
Fatboy, which bow did you order from Lukas?
I ordered my horn bow about two months ago and am getting ready to order one of his fiberglass composite bows as well, most likely the Damascus with the horse bow grip, plan to use it in mounted archery. This one will be a bit lighter on the draw say 65# . A somewhat lighter bow is very advantageous when shooting off a horse and one is trying to get off multiple shots at a gallop.
Oberon
Fatboy,
You will love his horn bows, pricey yes indeed but outstanding pieces of bowyers art , in a class by themselves.
Oberon
So what about pics of heavy bows being pulled?
Here are a few pics of bows I've shot lately.
64" 90#@28" Black Widow PLX.

77#@29" Turkey Creek Longbow. Walnut dymondwood riser, carbon back, glass belly, 100 year old walnut flooring from an old church for the overlays. Hopefully, Ill be the new owner of this one in a week or so.

I shoot a 75# Hill on occasion as well, but it doesnt have enough shelf for me, so its a pain to shoot.
Kid
Sorry no full draw pics' yet, but this is my "Tembo" 68" 75# @ 28".

I can shoot it pretty fair, but I don't think I would be able to shoot it for an entire round of 3d targets. If I tried my shooting would get really sloppy. So more power to ya Marlon.
Wet season stump shooting; Schafer Silvertip, 80# @ 29" (drawn a little past 28"):

Well done mate! Just the way Paul intended. One of the best recurve pics I've seen. That bow is begging to go hunting. How about a good story?
Whoops! I meant 80# @ 28", not 29".
A good story? This bow's story includes six pigs, two brumbies and a camel. I must admit that Paul and Bart are Giants I enjoy reading about, look up to and respect, and I am happy to shoot a bow that they would've enjoyed.
I'm shooting a 74# bighorn but after seeing what Marlon is shooting I dont even consider myself in the BIG BOW catagory, guess I'll have to re up my gym membership. :notworthy:
Very nice bows :)
Though my 70# Tomahawk can't be considered heavy compared to you guys, I'll try to shoot a few pics at full draw. Maybe even a video :)
Well, finally got hold of a damn camera. Should have a few pics up soon.

64" T-Hawk Diamond SS - 70# @ 28".
Great looking bows.
Man....I wanna see some video of ya'll shooting them.
Video? Uh oh, that can be arranged... :goldtooth:
I bought a used 76 lb @ 28 schafer that will be coming soon not even close to ya'lls. I could not go any higher in # either as I am not a big guy: 5'9". I had an 80# hill style longbow and it was too heavy to shoot without accuracy suffering.
"Big" is relative to the shooter. I'm 5'7" and have never weighed over 140lbs. I routinely shoot 60lb bows and that is pretty "big" for my size. To me, if I get to a 65, I'll be tickled as it would be half my current body weight.
I weigh... what... 190lbs at 5'11". And yet I had difficulties pulling a 70# bow at first.
lets see some of these guys at full draw with the heavy's :readit: especially Marlon with the 146lber
aint no good without pics
nice pic of the Silvertip Ben
tradtusker sent you pictures.
why do you guys think you need to shoot a 80 to 100 pound bow in the first place just wondering im 23 and i learned quick that you can kill anything in the world with a 45 pound bow as long as your bh is sharp and you have good shot placement, I have heard that more poundage can help if you have a bad shot or shot placement but how often can you shoot and practice with a 90 to 100 pound really
C'mon, mate:
1. That's a pretty big statement about "everything in the world".
2. Nobody on this thread who shoots these bows is saying that everyone should shoot these bows.
3. More poundage doesn't make a hoot of difference on a bad shot.
4. I personally don't shoot more than fifty arrows in a day - to me, it isn't about the number of arrows shot, it's about the quality of each practice shot. In fact, a normal practice session or stump-shoot might only be thirty arrows.
5. From what I've read (you'll note that I'm Aussie and have never seen a whitetail), I understand that with a 45 pound bow and a razor-sharp arrow in the right place, you'll be fine.
If you can, get a hold of everything you can that's printed about bowhunting in all its forms all over the world, especially all the history of our pursuit, and devour it. Most of it isn't about bow poundage, but it'll open your eyes to the variety of possible situations, animals and experiences out there. Also, search through this forum and soak it all up. We need to be a bit philosophical about bowhunting tackle choices, as it isn't a case of "one size fits all", and very experienced hunters arrive at quite different conclusions about their personal equipment selections, and they're all right.
Good luck,
Ben
good post Ben
Well said Ben. Marlon
ben tells it like it is. good on ya mate!
Ben :notworthy:
marlon- you mean 'cripplemaker' not 'kripplemacher' right? LOL LOL
great bows out there! I am envious of everyone who can shoot them accurate and without joint problems.
I love my shoulder, so I have to stop at a maximum draw weight of 60-65#
;)
Amen Ben...very well put.
Anyone shooting heavier bows deserves the same consideration & respect they give. You'll not find judgement from those above..,only encouragement and assistance. Heavy draws give me satisfaction & confidence.
There is just something satisfying about the way a heavy bow slings the arrows. Spot on Ben, nice form with that Schafer.
Oberon
Can't wait to see some of Marlon's pics.
Here's some pictures of Marlon pulling some damn heavy bows. A 148# warbow,...
