Title: Price of shafts and feathers
Post by: John Krause on May 22, 2009, 09:13:00 AM
I ordered a half doz 2016 Easton Legacy's shafts last Sat from the local archery shop. They quoted me $29.50 for the half doz. I picked them up last nite and they wanted $38 for them. I ended up getting them for the $29.50 but we had a discussion. I bought 2 doz feathers and they were 15 and some change.

They told me that shafts and feathers went way up. Anybody else seeing this? What's the deal? That is a heck of a jump.

At the shop I have been to they charge a lot for an individual feather.  I am going to start buying them in bulk from 3 rivers cheaper. I just use all yellow feathers and put a little mark on the back half of the cock feather with a marker for quick reference. So I don't have to buy 2 different colors.

Used to be the right wing feathers were cheaper than left wing, not any more, they are all expensive. Wood shafts are up to over two hundred dollars plus a hundred. I try to buy quantity to save money.  :help:

I've seen Legacy shafts in catalogs listed $32 per 1/2 dozen. That's not including the shipping. For the same price I bought 1 dozen sitka spruce shafts and made some very nice looking arrows.

In the near future I'm going to buy a couple feather choppers and buy full length feathers to save a few $$$$ in the long run.

Besides I get real good feeling when I make my own things.

Feathers have gone up in price, but that was awhile ago.  $38.00 for 1/2 doz Legacy's is high when compared to my price of $58.00 for a dozen.

Shaft prices vary greatly between shops.  I just bought some heritage 250s for 68.00 and saw them on the next lowest site for 78.00.  You gotta shop around.  Just remember that it's worth it to spend a little extra money at your local shop to keep it open.

I just bought 36, 5", Trueflight feathers for $19.20.  I also bought a dozen Gamegetter black shafts for $39.99, so I would say they are pretty reasonably priced.

chop yer own feathers and save. buy full length feathers by the hundred.

every june i gather canada goose feathers around the pond behind our house.  really good feathers for cheap, just takes a razor blade, some sandpaper and a feather chopper to turn 'em into quality arrow flight feathers.  guess they could be dyed, never bothered.

as to quality wood arrows at a fair price, those dayze are long gone, and so is the quality wood (remember the superior quality of acme poc's we used to get by the gross back in the 60's for less than $100/shipped?).  today, it's rare to order out 100 woodies and find more than half are at least decent.

Man I can relate.  This weekend we were at the Texas State Longbow championships and one of the fellows in our group needed target points.  He went to over to another bowyer that is a sponsor of ours and bought 2 dozen for $10.  Now that is a ripoff.
