Title: Shot an Acacia Wood bow..............?
Post by: snag on May 15, 2009, 09:41:00 AM
Last night at the local trad. archery club meeting one our members brought a beautiful Acacia Wood TD recurve. This was the first time I have shot one. The grip would take some getting used to after shooting Blacktail bows. It is very narrow in grip and limbs. But I found it very smooth and fast. An extremely well built and designed bow. Hmmmmmmmm.......?

I had an Acadian Woods TD at one time and wish I had never sold it.  It was a sweet shooting bow for sure.

I've posted these pics before, but I never get tired of looking at it!  This one's a keeper for sure.

58" 52@28, Macassar Ebony / Bocote riser, and "burl" Birdseye Maple veneers over action-boo limb cores.     :saywhat:

Here's a newer pic.  I had Tim re-shape the riser to more of low-wrist grip, and got rid of the leather.  The other two bows are a 1964 Shakespeare Necedah and a recently acquired Schafer Silvertip.

The only think I couldn't work out on this bow was the grip. Do you guys shoot it with the sharp ridge on the grip like you would a longbow? The bow kept wanting to twist in my hand...?

Thanks Larry!  I'll admit to ordering this one based on looks and reputation.  It was the first one I'd ever shot.

Snag, I had some issues with the grip when I first got it.  In my case, it was too deep from front to back.  Once I got Tim to reduce it a little, I liked it just fine. I hold mine just like I would any low to medium locater grip; throat centered in the web of my thumb with heel contact, and fingers wrapped semi-firmly around the front.  I don't have any problem with torque, but the grip did take me a few days to get used to it.

For anyone considering ordering one, or even buying used, I'd reccommend the "low" grip, sized small or medium, unless you have really big hands...

Snag, see I told you there were other great bows out there Haha. Just send one of your blacktail risers in with your order and ask them to duplicate it.

Those Acadian's are beautiful works of art. I would love to own one someday as well.

You may have seen my earlier post...but in the next few months Tim will be starting a "build-along" for us.  So you'll get to see first had all of the hardwork and talent that goes into one of his bows.

By the way...I'm the luckey guy that gets the beautiful bow when its done.

Can't wait for it to start.

Curtis, that is one fine looking bow! Love the wood. I would have to get used to shooting one. Just a different feel and approach I guess.

TJ, that's the problem! I keep coming back to the Blacktail and doing a comparation of grips. Hands down I haven't found a better grip!

Dave,

I tried one also but the grip just did not work for me. Tim said he could reshape it but I just sold it I prefer my Blacktail and Brack grips.
