I am going to try the video here..this is when they were coming across

A beautiful blonde grizzly sow with two georgeous cubs. I saw them crossing the ice from about a mile away and got there as fast I could with the pinzgauer.

this was just before they took off. I got within 50 yards of them before she spotted the pinz though.
She must have thought the pinz was a big male griz cause she stood up when they were walking up the hill and really gave it a good look then she made for the lake again. She will be kicking these two out this year I suspect.

The cubs were playing on the ice and then when they got to where I was they spotted the Pinz and took off.
this is them leaving - they can move

That was ok cause I wasn't hunting them or I would have been a bit more sneaky. Great night overall - saw 4 goats - these 3 bears - 4 grouse on the road - 4 porcupines and one red fox...stellar.
Now I saw a big boar on the mountain and am going after him on wednesday morning - a friend said he's been hanging around in teh green grass there
Man I would love to see the yukon!!!
" I saw them crossing the ice from about a mile away and got there as fast I could with the pinzgauer."
Is 'pinzgauer' Swedish for ex-wife ? :scared: :saywhat: :D
swiss army vehicle
Wow! Spectacular and magnificent!
Really cool!
Thanks for sharing,great pics

Ron
Incredible country for sure.
Awesome, looks like spring is starting to show! Great pics, thanks!
Best of luck with the big boar!
Everyone should plan a trip through northern B.C. and the Yukon to Alaska in their life time. It is some of the most amazing country you will ever see.
Thats neat stuff!!!
thats some good stuff.. would love to see the yukon... and i'd LOVE to cut some hounds loose and a big grizzly :) :) :)
Looks like those 'cubs' are old enough to get kicked free by the sow this spring; and that will mean a boar will be there...
I am going through a bad case of bear fever- hopefully the road will open so I can get to the bears ...like soon !
Good pictures !!
Too cool!!! Thanks for sharing.. :campfire:
What a site. You live in a beautiful place. I hope to one dat see some grizz. Great pics!
Great pics ... thank you very much, I can sit at my computer in Washington and enjoy the Yukon. Be safe and keep it coming !
Hi Jerry :wavey:
Nice footage! How's the bear hunting going? Any luck since Wednesday? Keep us updated and be sure and throw a picture of the Pinz in your post so the other people can see it.
Good luck my friend and be safe! :campfire:
Well an update - We went out yesterday - A friend has a bison and elk farm and has been having some trouble with grizz killing calves....anyway I went out to hook up an electric fence..SAW SOME MASSIVE TRACKS WOW.....
Video is in the process of uploading. So after we got her running we went out in the back forty...
We come around a corner in the field and in a little clearing we saw a big pile of earth in the middle of the clearing and something moving on it.
It was a huge GRIZZ and he stood up and looked us over so we drove closer. Well he had enough of that and CHARGED (you can have your four wheelers I will stay with the pinz thanks).
A pic of the pinz and the turrett:
here's one more pic of the pinz
(http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg163/jerbearyukon/image.jpg)
Anyway he stood up and bluff charged us and then ran over the embankment. So we continued forward and found where he had killed a horse (she was old I heard later anyway - probably wasn't going to make the summer)...but he was in the process of burying her when we came in - bad thing to do.
So we pulled the pinz around in the brush down wind and were getting set up when he came flying out of the bush again at us and stopped at about 30 yards...I bout caca'd my drawers....he stood up just popping his jaws....and then he ran in the bush again - he was pissed.
All the time he's blowing loud WOW..my heart was in my throat....So I got set up (RIGHT BESIDE THE PINZ) I wasn't taking any chances..if I had to go I was throwing the bow and into the truck...NUTS
So we waited all day for him nothing - you could hear him once and awhile popping and blowing but nothing we could see.
Foxes and yotes were coming to it all day - I took a few practice shots and in the video you will see as he comes up the arrow in the red part of the skull (.40 on the meter) (perfect). I have the distance - now if I can just keep calm without my lungs and heart pounding so I can't think then I should be ok.
Now you have to realize to this point we have been charged TWICE.....yipper with your fourwheeler I think you would have been lucky to get away..I am a bit nervous (do yuh think).
So who do I see off in the distance...hmm Mr. grizz and he's coming in....he bolts into the bush and chases a coyote off and he's a comin'
I will wait for you to watch the video when it downloads..now...sorry don't want to spoil anything yet.
oops it's done - just watch and look for the arrow in the horses head (.40)...

Yup I know I missed him - I can hit friggin coffee cups at 30 yards, but when my bud said take him - I wasn't quite ready to shoot cause he wouldn't stop moving....so I didn't pick a spot and I missed him.............. :banghead:
We are going out tomorrow again - give him a days rest...
Jer...bearless
What a great couple of pics. None of those around my part of the world.
Jerry,
Thank you, absolutely fantastic pictures! Your post sure has picked up my spirits as I sit at a desk working, great country.
Wow Jerry he is a beauty...Great Video! Dang man be careful...like I need to tell you this. :scared: Did you have to draw for a tag or are Grizzly tags over the counter where you live. Good luck buddy I hope to see a hero picture of you soon! :campfire: This is exciting! :jumper:
Jerry let me drive the Pinzgauer when he was traveling through US last year. They are very cool vehicles. If you do a search on the web you will find some video footage on the making and the testing of these vehicles. If your looking for a off road buggy the Pinzgauer is one of the toughest out there.
Did you click on the video at the bottom of the last post of mine???
my heart is still pounding
Jer
Yes! Are you wearing Depends? You may need them! :goldtooth:
Well it depends tom...tee hee...Grizz are over the countr - one every 3 years though
Jer
Very nice video Jerry, and what a beautifull animal... I played the video a couple of times and what was that last word spoken...? Couldn't quite make it out. :biglaugh:
We'll be waiting for the next instalment.
Ron
geez wilicars i think :biglaugh:
So I just talked with the owners of the property and they saw another grizz trying to get to the elk but the 12KV electrica fence did it's job - buggers
he wants me out there tomorrow - I will keep you posted.
Jer Bearless - for now
Need Help? Holy cow, what an awesome animal. Keep at it, I look forward to the hero pics as well!
Great story so far! Go get em'!
Good Luck!
Jerry that was a nice video,I just hope when you do connect it's in a vital organ, that was a nice bear.
Ich benotige ein Pinzgauer!! and a double rifle! That's a beautiful bruin!
Jerry, the PUCKERED SIFINKTER :scared: can affect the release or can cause involuntary premature release.LOL
That is too cool, I might of put a tree stand in one of those near by trees next to the dead horse and waited him out, just a thought.
Now Pick a spot and ajust for the puckered sifinkter :archer:
I think it was a gravity swell that made him miss. I have that problem here in Idaho too.
Thats awesome Jerry. Thanks for sharing that with us. I saw a sow Griz with cubs the other night on the road driving out of my area. Two weeks ago we had a big boar Grizz staring at us from 120 yards or so as we slogged up a steep hillside. He moseyed off. Yesterday I had a confrontation with some guys baiting in this Grizzly country....not pretty.
Bear hunting is never boring this year...
Good luck with the big Boy you are looking for. I'll be looking for more of your pics.
Well here's the update. We went out yesterday morning at 4 am and spooked him off the kill site. We snuck in hoping to catch him on it. I had the rancher/farmer behind me with his 340 and I snuck in as quite as I could with the shrew. We saw him on it and the wind was good, but swirling. I had good cover for the first 50 yards, but the I had to belly crawl to get any closer.
I was about 55 yards, when he turned and started getting agitated (nice way to say it I guess). He was looking our way and the ravens spooked.
So I laid there as still as I could. He started coming our way slowly moving his head side to side and then he stood up nosing the air.
I don't think he saw us, but was trying to get his nose to work. he started his huffing and puffing again and was hitting the dirt with his left paw HARD.
Then he charged and at about 40 yards he stopped. I heard a whisper behind me and he said "stay down". He shot him with the 340.
He died instantly. When we talked afterwards he explained that he wasn't sure we were going to get a chance for an arrow at that point and that was my last day to hunt there because I was going to PEI for a skills competition and had to have sat and sunday to get ready.
He couldn't have him running around the farm anymore so he thought it was best to take him out.
I was disappointed, but it's his place and so you have to respect that.
He did tell me he has lots of bears in the fall too that come to visit and he will help me pick out a great spot and get a tree stand in there so that was great.
Too bad I am so short of time this spring. I have to take a competitor to PEI for the National Skills Competition which pits apprentices in 57 different trades against the best in the country - kinda like the olymics of trades. It's a very wonderful experience for these young ppl and I have been training a fella for a while now - TIMING SUCKS THOUGH.
Then I just get back and have to go to Alberta and do some work on a duplex for my inlaws..so my spring bear is done now....urrrrrg
Anyway it was a real exciting two days. By the way..I did hit him the otherday....in the front leg..CRAP - I feel awefull - right through the muscle on the foreleg...We found the hole when we were skinning him out. I felt so bad for him and the rancher explained that "caca happens". He thought it probably happens more often than ppl think even with rifles but ppl are afraid to admit it.
I thought that would blow my chances to hunt out there again, but he said that he was pretty scared just holding the camera the other day too...he couldn't imagine was was going through my mind with only a sharp stick.
So all is good...the problem bear is out of his mind now...pretty unnerving out fencing and looking after animals all day and have to be looking for bears too. He shot one last year that charged his tractor and came right up on top of the front of it.
It had killed and elk and he didn't know he was just going out to check the elk and it came out of the bush so fast he didn't even see it until it was on the hood.
He says he never goes anywaywhere without the scatter gun or the 340...I know why now.
So here's a couple of pick for yuh....He would have been a real trophy for a bow hunter and he seemed ALOT BIGGER when he is charging but still a real nice grizz.
All I can say is that I have hunted for along time and ONLY with a bow - I have taken 11 bears - all blacks - some big ones too - 19-10/16's was the biggest, but grizzlies just bring something else to the table....I was real calm the second day it was amazing...I think the day before was my time for the buck fever I guess.
All I am trying to say is practice is wonderful, but the moment of truth is when it all counts. Try as hard as you can to get your breathing and try not to think about the size of the animal etc...just really look at the spot you are trying to hit (unlike my shot). All the other things will come later - size of the animal - the praise of your friends - the trophy you will have mounted and proundly displayed (you experience ppl know what I am talking about - cause it goes through all of our minds at some point)...what I am trying to say is..we practice and practice thousands of shots and visualize that broadside shot at our range (whatever that is) and then it happens and we HAVE TO REMEMBER TO CONCENTRATE on that one tiny little spot and forget the rest cause it doesn't matter now.
What matters is that we have come to a spot in our minds where everything in the past doesn't matter it's now and only now that matters.
Likek that great line in "the love of the game" - CLEAR THE MECHANIZIM....
Good luck to the rest of you ouir there on your quests this spring and throughout the year..Even how things worked out I am proud to be a bowhunter and am looking forward to your stories - successful or not - they are experiences we never forget.
Jer BEARLESS
Well, I guess that's the way it goes sometimes. I'm sure you could have taken him if you'd had a couple more days.... Next time.
Thanks for sharing the story.
Ron
Great story, great grizz.
Stay in touch with mr. rancher and go get one this fall.
Thanks.
Thanks for the keepin' the group posted on your hunt Jer!
I am sure that it was a disappointment that it did not work out as you had hoped, but it was still a *fantastic* experience that many on this site have now relished through your thoughtfulness.
Hopefully, you will have a future opportunity.
Shoot straight, Shinken
That was a great write up, thanks for posting it.
Too bad you didn't get a second try with the bow but understandable on the ranchers part.
