Title: Question for you snakeskin guru's!
Post by: adeeden on May 10, 2009, 07:40:00 AM
Ok, I just acuired a pair of very nice big 60" plus canebrake skins. I fleshed both of them yesterday and have them tacked to a board to dry. This is my first attempt at this. There is a definite "snake smell" coming from the drying skins. It's not a rotting/decaying smell but just a normal live snake smell. Is there anything i can do to get rid of the smell or will it go away when the skins are dry?

I just tacked a nice set of copperhead skins to my snake board yesterday.I bet they have alittle smell when I check them today also. It seems like two days or so and the smell gets better if I remember correct.

Usually the smell will go away.  I does on the cottonmouths and other waternakes and they smell abslolutely horrible when you are skinning them out.  I skinned one in the kitchen sink one day and I almost had to get a divorce.  Even though you fleshed them make sure you cut the belly scales off because its hard to get all of the fat off.  When they are real bad I put a very small amount of pinesol in water and soak them for an hour in the mixture before I stretch and dry them.  That helps with the odor.  Especially since I dry them in the house because it is just too hot outside here now and I worry about them really getting funky.

Bows look real nice with snake skins on.You`ll have to show your bow when you get it done.

Guys, how long do you have to let skins dry before they are ready to be applied to a bow??

During the summer a day or two will do. Just put em a zip lock baggie when done.
