Title: A Purple Dragon VS Turkey Story
Post by: vermonster13 on May 07, 2009, 08:15:00 PM
Scott Brightman AKA Purple Dragon and I have been talking turkeys since early April. He was supposed to come up to VT (he's Mass fellow) and do some shooting with me and a little turkey 101. Due to some unfortunate circumstances he has been unable to come up so we've been doing some phone conversations (he lost his internet connection which is why I am posting this). Last night he called me for some last minute advice as for he was going out today with a friend of his with DB blind. He called me pretty excited tonight.

He and his friend were out at first light this morning but the weather was awful. It was pouring rain and visibility/hearing was extremely limited. So they came back in and when the rain stopped earlier this morning they headed back out. As they were headed up the fire-road to there place they saw three Jakes harassing a lone hen in a field by the road and it was on.

They drove a little farther up the road and Scott's friend started some soft calling while Scott worked back down to the birds. One came on a line up the hill to the calling. Scott sat down with his back to a small fir tree and got a complete pass-through both wing butts at 8 yards with his Blacktail. He had worked up a plate for his bow to attach a gadget adapter and string tracker but it wasn't needed. The bird only traveled about ten yards before Scott was on him to finish the deal.

He wasn't a very big bird, but he was taken without a blind and with a trad bow. Scott's first one is a trophy in my book.

He's going to mail me some pics via snail mail and I'll get them posted when I get them.

Absolutely fantastic! Not easy hunting turkeys without a blind.      :clapper:

This bird was pretty much at his shot distance limit he has imposed on himself for turkeys. We had been discussing set-ups to get turkeys in that close. We had expected it to be a blind and decoy situation though. I must admit I'm pretty proud of him.

WOW!!!!

I can recall several threads in the past where people were asking if it was even possible to kill a turkey with a trad bow without a ground blind and the consensus across the board every time was that yes, it's possible but it can be VERY hard to do.  Many hunters talked about trying to do it for years with no success.  To do it your first time out is amazing.

My first and only turkey with a bow was in PA one year in the fall.  It was also a jake at about 10 to 12 yards, from the ground in the wide open.  I've missed plenty since...

A hearty CONGRATULATIONS! to both of you.       I chase my turkeys without a blind as well and it is a challenge.  Scott's jake is absolutely a trophy, and a great eating one at that.    :archer:
