i sit here and read all of these awesome stories of tradgangers getting together for hog, bear etc hunts, but they all seem to be to far away for the west coast trads to go on.i propose we get an elk hunt going for oregon.let me hear your ideas and thoughts on this matter, will have to be season after this as i have to take ben hunting this season and really want to give him a great hunt.unless he agrees to this season, totally up to ben.....lets here your ideas........larry
elkherder-if it is next season, count me in! I am not a west coaster, but I have friends in OR and I could maybe make it a hunting trip/vacation trip rolled into one. Keep me informed and thanks! Mike
right on...will do
I have 1 trad ganger coming out this year and possibly 2. It is just a matter of finding enough elk herds to go around.
What side of Oregon were you thinking about having the hunt east or west?
I am thinking Western Oregon because there are more stable elk herds and larger numbers.
i like eastern...hunted burns area 15 years ..plenty of elk...grew up on the coast and theres more on the coast but its steeper country...guess its a toss up....i was actually thinking of mt hebo on the coast...great area with elk all over it
on another note if we did choose mt hebo there are several small lakes that are remote and great camping spots very close to the elk hunting grounds
Keep me in mind for next year. Let's talk about this same time and set up a weekend or three to scout the areas.
Paul
cool....sounds good.....you ever hunted mt hebo?
Last time I saw some easteners try to hunt the coast they couldn't figure out how to get off the road...They just kept bouncing off the brush... :scared:
Unless you are from around here and know the coast,it is cruel and unusual punishment... LOL
Good luck...
yup...its fun watchin'em huff up and down the draws through the salmonberry, blackberry and the creeks at the bottom of every one of them...i grew up just south of tillamook (hebo area) love hunting there.you wanna go santiam?
The only place I found steeper terrain and thicker brush then the coast was the North Fork of the Walla Walla River in Northeast Oregon! :readit: :saywhat:
Why don't you hunt in Washington?
Santiam thats funny I laugh everytime someone not used to the coast looks at the salmon berry brush and reprod and says thats where the elk are?
oregon born and raised...never hunted wa,probably never will...i'll pay out of state fees.i know oregon and i'm too old to start finding new grounds
There's no brush on the Coast! Ha, ha, ha! For those who don't know, the current archery world record Roosevelt elk came off of Mt. Hebo. I might be in for a hunt with you, keep me up to date! :campfire:
What is the cost for out of state tags and License? I hunted eastern Oregon about 12 years ago and had a blast. I would love to go back.
2009 Non-resident hunting licence $76.50
Non-res elk tag $361.50
Most of the Coast you can take "Any elk"!
Not all of us stay on the roads ;) It was smokin hot when we were there. No rain, mist nothing after the first morning and the elk dove off the mountain and headed down. Well we went after them day after day all the way to the bottom.
Most beautiful country I've ever hunted in but the tuffest also. You better be in awsome shape to hunt them mountains. But I'd do it again in a heart beat :D
We had much better luck on the east side, Dang cats were every were though and people don't seem to bother them.
Tracy
what no room in camp for an East Coaster?
Wow...that isnt totally outrageous....Hmmm...I will be watching this thread for sure.
The east side of the state is not what it used to be for those that haven't been here in a while..Not even close... :(
Here is a couple Rosie bulls I seen the other day west of Eugene..Starting to get some growth...
Sounds like majority is aimiing for next year, based on the replies thus far. Larry, I ain't greedy.......someone else wants to come, no problem here >>>--------> a couple more hands just means less work when an elk goes down :bigsmyl: from an Ancient Spirits sent arrow! :bigsmyl: :jumper:
Ben
how about the eagle caps wilderness area?
slivrslingr....my brother is the hunter who took that world record bull...mt hebo,i know exactly where too. :readit: its not to bad up on hebo if ya stay out of the draws
if an easterner wants to go then you're more than welcome to join us,i'd love to go to the caps but my leg problems force me to stay outta there this year, maybe next year i can.
you coming from japan to hunt elk? you da man slivrslingr........
I lived in PC for 8 years and still have family there, so I come back every year for a visit. Due to other commitments, I won't be hunting elk in Or this year but hope to next year. My residency is in Wa so I'll be hunting there this year. I always enjoy going into Fox Grocery and seeing your brothers elk, it's a heck of a bull!
yup...big bull fer sure...good thing it didnt get burned up in that kimmels s-goods fire in tillamook...thats where it used to be...i grew up in sandlake, cloverdale area and pc...and hebo...and beaver... :banghead:
I lived in Medford for a while, now reside in Boise. I would love to join yall next year. Hopefully ill be able to leave the wolves behind.
About the only thing that bites on the coast is salmonberry, blackberry, mosquitos, no see ums, and the occasional devilsclub patch! No wolves there. Oh yeah, sometimes a whole herd can be within spitting distance, you can hear them, but can't see a hair, thanks to the brush, so that can bite too! On the up side, if you're into selfbows, the stands of vine maple can get distracting!
The Kimmels fire was a tragedy, they had quite a collection of rare and collectable lead launchers that burned up. Is the head in Fox's a replica or the actual rack? :archer:
How far from the Portland area are you talking about? I have a friend living there I have not seen in years and would love the chance to make a dual purpose trip. Besides, I'm loving the probable cost of this hunt compared to others I have been dreaming about.
Larry, you can count me in. I was hoping to tag along with you and Ben this year but, the military is sending me to some schools around that time. I am definitely interested in a Tradganger elk hunt next year though and will do what I can to be available for any help. Take care.
jerry...the coast range is about two hours from portland....i think its the original rack...did you ever hear the story behind that bull slivrslingr?
right on tw...should be fun...anyone who wants to go no matter where you live is surely welcome to join us on an elk hunt
Would there be a place to pull a trailer into or is it pack in and tent. Ive never been Elk hunting, always thought about it.
Are they bigger than pigs? :bigsmyl:
there are spots to put a trailor at a couple of the small lakes
Jerry,
Hebo is about 2 hours from Portland.
Anyone planning on coming from out of state should plan on spending a few days after the hunt sightseeing and enjoying all the area has to offer. There's tons to see and do, including some of the best salmon fishing on the coast, there and up around Tillamook. The Oregon coast is very family friendly if you're thinking of bringing them.
Elkherder, I've heard a couple different versions of the taking of that bull, I'd be interested in hearing it from someone with firsthand knowledge.
Keep me in the loop for next year, Larry? My daughter just accepted a job with Oregon fish and game, and is on her way to Bend right now to find a place to live. Maybe we all can work on getting her to leave the wheels at home, and switch to something a little lighter? I imagine I can wander down from Leavenworth, and I'll bring a bottle o` decent scotch for Silvrslingr as well! After all, it's better than Advil for those aches and pains! Strictly medicinal, gentlemen, strictly medicinal :bigsmyl:
lol.....sounds good angus, maybe we'll have an insider at fish and game eh? lol....bend is a great town.i have been thinking of moving there myself.one thing for everyone to think about is a chartered fishing trip for all of us out of garabaldi or depoe bay...big fun, bottom fishing, halibut etc...around $70 per person for a fun time...something to consider for us..this is the ocean and if you get seasick then maybe not huh...........larry
BIGGER THAN PIGS??????......   :D :D :D .....LOL.......just a little wtpops
Another perk to having an elk tag in Oregon is that if you don't score during September, you can come back and hunt several units for cow elk during the late season in December. The weather is slightly damper, I've just about had to don scuba gear on occasions, but the rifle hunters are done chasing them and they're herded up for the winter. And if that's not enough incentive, if you spring for a deer tag, there's some smoker blacktail bucks around. I actually enjoyed hunting late season more than early, even with the sketchy weather! Man I miss living there. :( :knothead: :banghead:
i dont :readit: spent a long time there growin up...visit..yes..live there again.. no...but it is very nice to go there in the summer and camp and winter to hunt ..fish, etc
this hunt not only sounds affordable, but it seems I could learn a few things. any of you guys up to watching a flatlander huff and puff up and down the sides of them hills?
Run up and down some stairs for a couple of months and you will have no problems! :bigsmyl:
lanoy pm'd me and says he'd be happy to pack ya around on his shoulders ...now thats right neighborly huh.
sure is, good for him I don't weight as much as a quartered elk :D
Larry, the military is keeping me in pretty good shape but, I ain't in that good a shape! :knothead:
sorry larry..guess yer hoofin it man
Hey guys,
Keep me posted on this and if anyone from the midwest would want to carpool that would be even better! Would have to be next year or the year after for me! I'll be burning up my vacation in Montana this year!
lookin like next year rob....larry
count me in for next year!!!
This sounds like a truly great learning experience. Please count this flatlander in - and I promise to keep larry from NY in-line and out of trouble, LOL
Course, larry (AKA one bow man), you do need a new elk bow ;)
well, that "one bow man" thing didn't last long did it lol. Time for a new Centaur!!
I don't know what your pulling right now but, the minimum poundage for elk is 50# in the state of Oregon. A tuned setup, sharp broad head and hopefully a willing elk and that should take care of things. :D
yeah, I read thru the regs last night. I'm a couple of lbs shy with the bow I have now. On the search for a heavier one !!
Good luck on your search. Looking is one of the funnest parts of finding a new bow. Let us know if we can help with anything.
if there is still room--i can keep an eye on southpaw -while he watches larry from NY!!
Next year is a long way off, lot of things can happen between now and then but I have been wanting to elk hunting again, and have never been to Oregon. If you'll have another flatlander count me in. Hey I could even stop in at Wes Wallace's, that would be great as I have 4 of his bows!!
I really wanted to go on the group Co.elk hunt last year, put on by a poster on the other site but life happens. Sounds like they ended up with around 20 guy's and had a Great time.
sounds like a couple of camps are gonna be needed, but thats cool.
Larry if you need a ring leader for a camp let me know. I know just about everywhere on the coastal range. I would love to see their eyes when I put them on a big bull and they hear it screaming 20 yards from them. No amount of videos can prepare you for that hair raising experience. Turns a big bull of a man into a shaking little boy. I love it tho. let me know, I would love to help. P.S. watch the Premos elk video where he comes to Oregon and see what you are getting into. It is like no place on earth. Ferns the size of VW Bugs, Trees that seam to go up for ever. I have been as far east as Ill and I know now why people thought the world was flat. It is not flat out here at all. This sounds like lots of fun. I will go just to help guide. Look forward to it.
i was thinkin more like 5 yds but ok that'll work too...lol...i grew up south of tillamook where ya dont lose yer old lady ya just lose yer turn....haaa....been waitin to use that one for weeks i tell ya.....more than welcome to join us slayer.............larry
Man, you guys are really amping this trip up!!!
Almost makes me want to wait for next year-----ALMOST :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl:
Ben
Ben, look at it this way, you can still come next year and you'll be one up on most of us. Good luck this year and hope you score a big one!
ohhhhhh....ben,ben,ben....you are soooooo gettin videod THIS YEAR....MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA :readit:
I would be interested as well, I lived in Astoria long time ago and enjoyed life in those days had young legs then too!
I maybe out there anyway was going this year but lost my job and had to regroupe so will have to wait a year. I have a buddy that likes the east side but eiher or for me.
five yards? hey I'm good with that   just so long my heart doesn't jump out of my chest.
and if bamboo comes I'll keep an eye on him while he's keeping an eye on southpawshooter
WHAT!!!! :scared: Elkherder---- you don't have any tricks up your sleeve do you! That would just be cruel, man! :bigsmyl:
can ya say VIDEO CAMERA ????? haaaaaa sounds like we have plenty of hunters..we will have two seperate camps within a mile of each other and we will have to be sure of gps usage and mark your camp and so on.i carry two of them so i'll have one just in case. we also will all have to pitch in and rent some type of emergency beacon for each camp, maybe more than one per camp.looks like a few of us will be goin up early to set things up so i'll have to talk a couple locals into going..(woodpiles,meatpoles,clear campspots, build fire pits etc)........whew...i ever tell ya i type one handed?
i too like the east side hunting more because of the clear and not so steep factors...hard choice...east has good elk numbers and i know it very well...west has bigger herds but a hell of a lot of brush and steep little draws.its a toss up...east side also shaves off over 300 miles of drive time for anyone coming from out of state....i love the coast but i'm leaning towards eastern or central oregon as i really feel that you cant shoot what ya cant see in the brush and its far easier to get lost in the coastal hills as they all look the same.when i think about it east makes more sense.......larry
Hey guys, if there's room, include me and my Dad, sounds like a great trip!
Jr.
done....we'll be stopping accepting hunters before too long as we cannot possibly take everyone.sorry but thats reality.cant take 100 people elk hunting, wish we could but pretty obvious why we cant...........larry
we are at 19 hunters allready...20 will have to be it...i'm sure we'll get some drop-offs but i think one more will do us.....any input on this?
Is this for this year or next year that you are filling up? I would like to be put in for next year if at all possible. Do I tell you Elkherder? thanx, Travis
next year and yes you are in travis............larry
Larry, you can count me in on the help setting up. Just let me know time in advance as I have too clear it with the Military Department and make sure I can take leave for that time frame. I agree with you on the Central or Eastern part. The coastal region will be a nightmare for those that are not familiar with Oregon and we want this too be a hunt with good memories not painful ones! :biglaugh:
I'm kinda really interested. When specifically is the season. I'm assuming in september 2010. How hard is it to get archery tags for this hunt. Is it over the counter or draw. I hunted with paul 2 weeks ago and would enjoy sharing a camp with yall again. Oh ya, I'm from Texas and I have no idea how to hunt elk. Any pointers? Bhill
brent...tag and license is over the counter..best thing to do is rent a bunch of elk hunting dvds from a archery pro shop and watch them over and over and get all the info you can out of them....other than that maybe some books.elk hunting is pretty much like turkey hunting in you locate, set up then call em in..little bigger though
Sounds like fun. When you get some more specifics on this hunt, assuming you have room, I'm definately interested. Thanks Bhill

Brent,
It is all over the counter. However, you MUST purchase your tags before opening day. This year opening day is August 29th.
You will want to start a serious excercise regimine if you plan to do this hunt.
I put a 25lb pack on and hike 3 miles every other day right now. I plan to be up to 35lbs and 5 miles by elk season. It is pretty much a stay in shape year round type of hunt.
If you are not in shape, don't bother buying a tag. At least that is my opinion.
I will shoot you an email of my friends bear hunt last Saturday to give you an idea on the terrain and difficulty level.
Were were only in 3 miles and fortunately, our packs only weighed about 50lbs each on the way out.
If you have interest in doing an elk hunt, I recomend purchasing a video library of elk hunts. They really help on calling techniques and learning a bit about elk behavior.
I am new to elk as well, but did manage a nice 335 bull last Sept. with the training wheels.
Paul
ok guys here it is in a nutshell...go to google earth and type in: delintment lake oregon .this is an absolutely beutiful area with the lake stocked with big fat trout,i've pulled 18 inchers from it several times so they are there.very nice camping area.we can hunt behind the lake and we are only twenty miles away from my favorite hunting spot in the world.
i chose this area for several reasons, actually more for the east coasters because i want you to have one of the best hunts ever.fishing, campfires allowed, showers, great scenery and i really dont want people who may have a hard time climbing up and down hills all day to get discouraged and give up and sit in camp and feel left out...i hate that and wont allow it unless yer dyin or something.camp lounging is only for me :readit: lol... the sheer number of people going is another reason this is the place we should go...when its time i'll be reserving the campground for us..we'll have plenty of rigs to go to areas to hunt, there are plenty of elk and deer so you never know it could happen to anyone at anytime.we are going to have several guys taking charge of small groups of hunters to show the first time elk hunters the ropes...I NEED VOLUNTEERS with elkhunting experience at least two more locals if we can....i ever tell you guys i type one handed? :bigsmyl:

just gettin started...gonna go over to the lake for a three day campout here pretty soon and plan on taking lots of pics of the area to show you guys :readit:
i'll keep quiet for a small fee larry....lets see....hmmmm....a nice centaur should do the trick....yup thats it...muahahahahahaha
we can have a great trip in this area...lots to see, plenty of deer, elk and i love going out during the day and spot and stalk muley bucks that are bedded along the rock bluffs, very challenging
Man, is this ever gonna be a long 18 months.......Beautiful countryside, great animals!
that big bull didnt come from the hunting area...thats the spider bull from utah i think...just wanted to tease larry some more.... :D :D :D :D
Larry(elkherder), we may want too start an email list of those attending, as this thread surely ain't going to be around for a year and a half. That way we can send out updates and monitor who is and isn't going to make it. Also, a standbye list for any cancellations that may occur. Just a thought. :p
Elkherder, isn't Delintment Lake in the Ochoco unit, which is a draw hunt?
Just looking at Google Earth and it looks like the lake is in the Maury Unit.
Thats not the spider bull but he's a dandy for sure. :readit:
You guys will have a great hunt, Awsome country :D
Tracy
snag....its in the malheur unit right on the edge of the silvies unit
what no lung busting mountains? no impenetrable brush choked gullies?...well ok, I'm still in :D
elkherder, if you were to put me on a bull like that...well I might just GIVE you my Centaur...or at least the antlers, I mean how the heck would I get then home??
yep, I think I better stick with little spike bulls  :campfire:
carefully....would be expensive unless you drive over.then i guess you'd just have to show them off all the way home :readit:
Delintment Lake is in the Silvies unit.
The bull in that photo posted above was killed in a "high fence" operation in Idaho a couple years ago. :saywhat:
yup it is...cant find my dang maps :banghead:
I wanna get in on this hunt. This is the stuff that dreams are
made of!
btw.... What in blue blazes is a Spider Elk? I'm still a humble elk grasshopper.
The "Spider bull" was a huge bull killed last year in Utah with a rifle. It was a special auction tag and I think it went for 150,000 but it was a wild elk.
Go to the Boone and Crockett site and you can see some picks of the bull or bugle magazine. Very impressive for a wild bull.
Tracy
woulda been funny if somebody woulda went in and plugged it for free
I'm definately in for 2010. The camp and photos before they were taken off were amazing. I'm with buckster, this trip is a dream in the making. If someone is making a list of contact info, just tell me where and to whom I should pm. Thanks Bhill
hi there everyone .........lol........ :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
elkherder it looks like you moved or deleted the pictures from photobucket which broke the link. Did you create a new album and move the pictures there? As for the compound pic, yeah it's only a matter of time before that's gone. If the admins deleted it the post would note it was edited by the admin.
i didnt move or delete anything...have no clue what happened...hope my photobucket is ok
Well I looked around in photobucket using your link and only saw bow pictures.
i see that....my woman says she deleted all but those of evo.....grrrrrrrrrrr....trying to restore my pics....dang her anyhow....sorry for thinking admin removed them..you have my apology
sweet....man i'm a regular little computer wiz these days...scary :bigsmyl:
EVERYONE WHO PLANS ON GOING ON THIS HUNT NEEDS TO PM ME AN EMAIL ADDRESS.... we are at 21 and i'm sure we will have some that cannot make it so if you cannot go or change your plans please let us know......thanks
found my maps finally...delintment lake like stated is in the silvies unit...it is in the ochoco national forest but is in the silvies unit.called the dfw in burns to confirm and we are good to go for over the counter tags.i've hunted this area for over 15 years and its always been open to general season tags...........larry
any locals wanna make a road trip this weekend to burns? gotta go find bens bull and get him tamed down a bit ? any takers?
Larry, I wish I could go with you but, got drill as soon as I return from Georgia tomorrow. Good luck though and stay safe out there!
Hey, you don't mind tying him down and feeding up a bit to fatten him do ya......maybe put a bell around his neck so I can find him in about 3 months?!! :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl: :campfire:
Ben
Elk hearder, I don't know how to pm because I'm gifted ! I just learned how to email last year. My email is brent@ehillandhill.com Thanks for taking the lead on this. Bhill
thanks brent....when you want to pm someone look at the white envelopes at the top of there page...across from the name...click on the one with the two little guys on it then just put in a subject and type message then send....i have your email address............larry
muahahahahaha....trouble? me?....nawwwwwww....never :bigsmyl:
Larry, sent you a PM with my e mail.
Dang I would love to go and track down a few ELK this weekend. BUT....I am going bow fishing and if I flake out on my friends they will hang me. I have been promising them for some time to go. Next weekend is the Apple Knockers Shoot in Hood River and I am planning on going to it as well. After that I am open to go. Or at least till the next shoot. I think your right the coastal hills would swallow up a few guys and that would be bad. I have been turned around in there my self many times. Over east you can at least see what your shooting at before it steps on you. Let me know Larry if you go again later.
"GONE SCOUTING" PLEASE LEAVE A MESSAGE AT THE BEEP
haaaaaa...i'll go later on as well, need to work on my 78 chev sw/4x4 project that i've been neglecting
I am up for shooting the Apple Knocker on Saturday morning and then jetting over to Delintment Lake after the shoot.
Yeah, doing a shoot on Saturday morning then arriving at the lake in plenty of time to make camp and maybe catch a few trout before night fall sounds appealing.
Hike around all day Sunday and come back Monday.
I think I just talked myself into it :D

Silly question, are we talking about sept 2009 or 2010. I planned for 2010 but If everyone else thought 2009, I can be convinced with enough notice. Thanks, Bhill
2010
still lookin for some email addresses
ttt
I went to Delintment lake over the weekend and did a little scouting.
My step son, nephew, and I put on a few miles and found several elk trails and droppings. There were 2 sets of tracks on the road near the Guard Station 2 or 3 miles from camp. There happens to be a large grassy meadow and creek right there, so I figure it is probably a decent area.
There were quite a few mule deer does, but we didn't see 1 buck.
The country appears fairly easy to navigate and it is open enough to make hiking fairly easy as well.
It looks like some of it could get fairly rugged, but not bad.
We didn't see any elk, but we did talk to a couple of guys that saw a herd of about 50 in the area.
We were looking for sign more than anything and shooting a lot of stumps to keep the boys entertained.
I plan to do at least 1 more trip over there this year and may hunt it this season to get a better feel for it.
Paul
nice area isnt it....theres elk there but i will have to show you my secret area i guess.the hunting will mostly be done away from the lake.there is one area that i have been told holds lots of elk during the rut..guess its a hike in there though roughly 5 miles one way, never went in there but i will go in and check it out.the best area by far is the area i will take ben this year.i have called in 20 bulls in one day in this area.this is where i have taken most of my bulls.its 20 miles from the lake but well worth the extra driving.i also have a couple of wallows on my gps...one is dry but the other is very active every year.
i found another area fairly close to the lake that i will be scouting out real soon...been wanting to go in there for several years but never got around to it..this is in my opinion an area that all hells gonna break loose when the bulls start yellin at each other and the cows are singin.i have spotted a big wallow from google earth that looks to be a traditional wallow....i smell backstraps
Larry, don't forget to take your camera! Gonna need some eye candy!! :bigsmyl:
roger
