Title: dark limb veneers
Post by: Goke on May 05, 2009, 10:25:00 AM
I am looking at wood choices for a new bow. I want a set of dark limbs but still want to use wood. Anyone have some photos of good dark wood veneers. Possibly ebony, zircote, etc.?

Well I just did a bow with the darkest Walnut I've found in the limbs under clear glass.  A rich dark brown. It looks really classy.  I mixed in Bocote in the riser, limb bolt overlays and limb tips to give it some bling. I could email you some photos later tonight or tomorrow when I have more time. Sounds like you may be looking for a black though.  You also have the option of using a dye of your choice on any wood really.

What about these ones? Ziricote under clear glass, some with footing.

One thing to consider is the tendency for dark woods to show any cosmetic flaws in the glass.  I can live with a streak here and there but some folks can't.  For that reason alone some cringe to go with a dark veneer (just what I've been told).  It's also important to remember that the bowyer doesn't have much input on the glass manufacturers cosmetic quality control, although I know plenty have tried.

My bow (Border GL) is actually glassless but has carbon lams instead. I don't worry about scratches anyway though.

The lighter set is Zebrawood and the darker set is Bolivian Rosewood. Both on Pittsley Predators.

There's always Cocobolo, Macassar Ebony, Gaboon Ebony and Wenge veneers to consider!    :)    And you could look at the limbs listed on RER's website for more ideas.

I think the curly claro walnut would be mind boggling!

I have Rose Oak bow with Ziricote veneers.  I tried to take some pictures last night, but I sure cannot figure out the lighting...I'll try again tonight, but in the meantime you might be able to see a semi-decent picture here:
