I'm thinking on doing a caribou hunt either this year or next. Any trad guy's planning on get a crew together to go? I'd like to go with a bunch of trad's vice wheelies.

Haven't looked into it yet, but I bet our trad gang buddies and give us some good ideas were and when to go.
Trad Gang, You guys/gals that have gone before please give us some ideas. I tried searching for threads on this, but I could not find any.

Go to the members videos section here on the gang. There is a slide show and some video from my 2003 trip with Dave Hammenstaffer. Several other clips from other folks hunts as well. I have been to Quebec twice and I know some others have been to AK and Newfoundland. If you are looking at Quebec, pm me if you'd like any info. Good Luck-Mike
I work at a caribou camp and have groups of traditional bowhunters there occasionally but I never mention the specifics unless someone asks me since I am not a salesman, promoter, booking agent, or owner and I do not want anyone to get any wrong Ideas.

Anyway, some good info was submitted there and I see a couple of post below that also could be helpful. I used to live in Alaska on the Kenai Peninsula but did not get into the northern interior so I do not have any first hand knowledge. Now Ken's post with regard to caribou in Quebec is very interesting and would be good to hear more. Anyway, bottom line is that for one I have and do dream of a caribou hunt and seems like to do it right a year of planning is not to long. I would say that you could combine a caribou and moose hunt, but for me moose breaks the rule of if I can't carry or drag it out I don't think that I want to shoot it LOL.

I assume that I can say the following.
For the last 15 years (August and September) I have been working for an outfitter that offers what they call a European type of caribou package.
You are hunting basically the same caribou and the same northern taiga/tundra as the other outfitters but it is a blend between a DIY hunt and a fully guided, cooked meals type of hunt.
They fly you to an outpost camp (I am already there) where there are 2 plywood cabins (with tarp roofs) to lodge a maximum of 12 hunters, plywood beds with mattresses, oil furnaces, propane lights and cooking stoves (no oven), pots and pans, cooking utensils, 3 boats and motors (unlimited gas), a screened meathouse, a small freezer, and a generator,etc.
I have my own quarters as well as another boat. I am the only person there and make sure everything is functioning, and (since I am a guide by profession) I like to help the guys get caribou.
You must bring your own food and sleeping bag. The downside is driving to LG4 but the savings overall are substantial. Several outfitters offer this type of package now but I don't think that it is as known. The hunts are offered in August and September but I prefer September.
True North Safaris on Mackay Lake with Gary Geab. Great hunting and very good guides for Trad guys. I highly recommend this outfitter, last year 7 trad guys 7 bulls with 5 big enough for P&Y.
Again, I have nothing to sell and simply posted the info for those who want to know but I guess I should have mentioned that Quebec outfitters have a 2 caribou limit with the occasional black bear and fishing included.

I was in AK from 1982 to 84 when I was in the Air Force. Never hunted any and I truly regret it. I did get in some awesome fishing though. I'd like to do a caribou hunt in 2010 for my big 50 BD.

We moved their in 81 and then left in 87. Our son stayed and lives in Anchorage. Are you thinking of AK or Candada?

I have been on 3 different Caribou hunts in Quebec and by far the best hunt was my last one with Jack Hume Adventures. I thought the other 2 outfitters before were OK until I experienced JHA. In my opinion the Hume operation offers best bang for the buck for the archer.
