They say bad company corrupts good morals and I guess there must be something to that as I have let my hunting buddies coax me across to the dark side.
I am a BRAND NEW traditional shooter (not comfortable enough to hunt yet). I purchased a reflex/deflex design longbow from a young maker in West Fort Worth named Chris Mayo. 60" 50lb @ 28. Very pleased with the bow though it is a little harder to shoot than my buddies' BW and Great Plains recurves. I'm gettin there.
I'm enjoying the Tradgang sight though all of the info is a little overwhelming.

What you have done is begin a trek that you can enjoy for the rest of your days. Welcome to the ranks>>>>>--------> ron w
i was overwhelmed when i started my trad journy last year as well wuff welcome to teh camp fire I found alot of info on this site and it was and still is overwhelming what i found to help me is to k.i.s. )keep it simple stick with the basics once you have that done then you can start messing with diff things heavier arrows wieght forward foc. Im along way from playing around but this approached stoppe dmy head from hurting. Enjoy the ride my friend!
If that wud it be,... then welcome to "the dark side"!!!
You are in deep do do now. I hope you enjoy it as much as me.
Jack
I've had to reprogram my thinking. It's weird but when I go out to shoot all I have is the bow and a hand full of arrows, I keep looking around to see if I've left something. It doesn't feel like I'm packing up and moving as with the compound.
Welcome to the Trad campfire, as for being the dark side I always thought I came from the dark side as trad is a whole lot brighter!! trying to get within 20 yards of game and then make it happen seems to be a closeness with nature only found in trad!!! :campfire: :archer:
Welcome, my friend. Yes it can be quite overwhelming what with tuning arrows and whatnot, but you're in good company. I found my arrows started flying straight when I finally got out of my own way! Interesting how we can easily overthink things at times, eh?
Also, you can't ask for a better community than this one, the encouragement is awesome! I still haven't connected with my first trad harvest yet, but I'm working on it (you'll get your picture and story yet, jimmerc!!!)
Thanks for the welcome. NorthernCaliforniaHunter you have said the samething my buddies said. "Don't overthink the thing." You guys are right. I had some good help locally and got my arrows pretty close from the start and it has made shooting a lot more fun.
I do a lot of pig hunting around here and took my first pig with a muzzleloader a couple of weeks ago. Can't wait to do it with my longbow.
Thanks again for the welcome.
Wuff
It only gets better! Welcome aboard! :campfire:
"They say bad company corrupts good morals and I guess there must be something to that as I have let my hunting buddies coax me across to the dark side."
NO NO NO you have that backwards they brought you into the light.
Just remember this is all about having FUN.
Welcome aboard! I made the switch a little over a year ago and you won't find a nicer bunch of helpful people.
They are almost like family
You have made a fun decision.
Yep its all fun and games from here on out! Congrats on a great decision!
what Jack said, you are in deep do do :help: !!!
tip, start buying cheap bows at yard sales now so when you order that new custom bow your better half will not know the difference. Or better yet buy her a bow and get her started. enjoy the journey, it's well worth every penny....
" from the dark side... lead you it will"
Traditional archery Yoda
Keep it Simple ... It really is ...
I think that shooting at targets is one world; and hunting with a bow is another. I have been shooting at targets for months - and went up the road to my bear bait and stopped to hunt some ground squirrels.
I started stalking; and waiting for shots; and making shots that were just plain fantastic; even though the little buggers ducked each shot.
No blood was shed; but I was hunting again; and felt refreshed.
It never ceases to keep the world out of my mind; and makes me more connected to the wild.
Welcome to the dark side :archer:
Welcome to the "Light Side" of the campfire... :campfire:
You're in great company!! Never enjoyed archery more than since I joined the dark side, light side, whatever. Also have met the best folks ever at 3D shoots and here on TG. Enjoy the comraderie that will happen when you make the effort to shoot and talk with folks of like mind.
Got my first recurve when I was 8 years old some 47 years ago and have never been without one. If I may disagree.........you have now come to the bright side. It's about the people, the history and the journey. Welcome!
Jerry
I think you will find trad archery relaxing for the most part especially when you are on a extended hunt somewhere and you know the only thing that could wrong is your string, no worried about sights, fall away rests, rangefinders, releases and all the other gimmicks! Do not get me wrong each their own but the simplicity gives me piece of mind!
Well come, ye! Tis a fine step to have taken>
Welcome to the gang. :wavey:
i'm proud of you for being brave enough to take that first step and get some good equipment.
you will really enjoy shooting.
Hey wuff welcome to the fire,,you and me be neighbors here Iam over in Dawson,Hubbard areasorta new to trad too just built a Hill blank, and getting off into arrow building before too long, got my wife a Maddog ordered and waiting on it ,,give me a holler and we can get together and do some shooting.....
David
"You have made a fun decision."
I'm beginning to understand what that means. Those same guys that "brought me into the light" kept saying there were things you can do with a traditional you can't do with a compound.
I didn't understand what that meant until I went on my initiation shoot with them. Shooting over hay bales at targets that you can't see using half draw techniques. Shooting from weird positions that, at least, I certainly couldn't shoot a wheel bow from.
You guys are right. It was fun.
Thx Wuff
To David Lewis:
Got your canoe out of dry storage? I hope those folks that wanted rain are happy now. I think I'm getting webbs between my toes.
You're braver than me, I haven't got the nerve to make the jump to building my own wood arrows yet. I haven't got passed fletching my own carbons. Found out that an Arizona EZ fletch doesn't work well on feathers.
One thing good about living where we do is that we've got a bunch of good bow builders right here in the area.
Later, Wuff
I have been shooting bows for over 20+ years and this last December my Wife gave me a Recurve for Christmas so I am just a couple of months ahead you, I always want to shoot Traditional and now that I am I love it I have not shot my Compound Bow at sense i got my Recurve and this is a great journey. Blake
Wuff, take an exacto knife or an emery board and make the feather slots in the Az Easyfletch a little larger, and it'll work fine! And welcome to the fire. I've met a lot of great people here, gotten some great advice, learned a ton, and had a blast-you're gonna love it!
