I am having Mike at maddog bows build me a new recurve, 50# @ 28"(my draw length). I plan on building cx heritage arrows. Could I please get advise on which size shafts I should buy. I use 125 gr Zwickeys and hope to have a total arrow weight of 550 to 600. To get this weight what are my options,weight tubes, front end weighting or a combination of both? I am relatively new to trad shooting and dont want to screw up.
A lot will depend on how the bow is cut in relation to center, but I would probably look at a CE150 with 100 gr. inserts and the 125 point if it is cut out a little from center. That should get you to about 525 or so. Then I would add tubes if you want more. I think that would be a good combo without more weight. Start long and cut as you bare shaft test. Get some heavier point to try also so you can check before you cut. If you get down to minimum length and you are a little weak then you can cut down the inserts a little to lighten the front and stiffen the arrow up if you don't want to go to a lighter point. You can also get some 50 gr. inserts to try at longer lengths if you like a longer arrow. If the bow is cut to center I would try the 50 gr. inserts. That will lighten you up some so then maybe you want to add some tubes.
I have 2 recurves they are 49 and 54@28. Both are center cut. My draw is 29. I shoot the heritage 250's. Shaft are cut at 30", 100g brass inserts and 125 tips. I am a big believer in the dynamic spine calculator that has talked about on this site. I have tune several bows using it.

I should mention I shoot Fast Flight string. the type of string you use can make a difference if you are on the edge.

I have used 150s and 250s I would stay to 30" shafts 100gr inserts and your 125gr broadhead with 100gr steel adapters ..thats 325 up front this combo works well for me I think 150s are too soft a spline if you are going for weight and high foc 250s all the way~! :thumbsup:
Thanks guys, I think I will get a test kit to try different combos, it could be cheaper in the long run. As for weight tubes, how do they affect spine?
