I'm building a feather burner per Trad Gang member Bodork's design and was wondering if anyone can suggest a substitute material to use as a feather burning ribbon (the real deal is only a couple bucks to buy but I was hoping to use a substitute until I pick some up...hopefully at the Trad Archery Expo at the end of the month).

Thanks, I'll give it a try tonight! (Hope my wife doesn't mind if one side of her breakfast toast isn't!). I made a crester last night...I'll post picts of both after I finish the burner (not sure yet how to post picts or avatar...not sure I have a url (if that is what I need)...not too computer savvy??)

Tried toaster ribbon half a year ago.
The one I could fmble out was way to soft and thin. It did get real hot though...says my right index finger :knothead:

I just wanted to thank everyone for all of the help I got off searching past posts regarding the construction of my home-made feather burner! It works great!
Also, following leads from other Trad Gang posts, I have built a crester!
I have include a couple photos of the burner and crester for you to check out (and to see if I could attached photos).
Next I will attempt to make what I need to process my own turkey feathers!

Congratulations on your new feather burner! I'm glad you tried it even after you saw the instructions and learned the concept. I know it is very crude but it works real good. What did you spend? Around ten bucks?
Especially good to see that your house hasn't burned down yet! ha ha That sure is a nice kitchen to be burning feathers in. How do you explain the smell to your wife?

I tried using music wire but it melted (cannot recall off hand the diameter...maybe 0.025"). I ended up using feather burning ribbon... Works great!

Is that burner plugged into a wall socket? It would be a lot safer if you insulated the eyebolts. 120 volts AC will bite pretty hard so don't let your adorable son mess around with it. If you get both hands on the bolts the current flows straight through your heart.
Cupcake, the ribbon is only spliced to one of the wires on the cord. The cord is plugged into a socket and an appliance is plugged into the female end of the cord and turned on. The current flowing to the appliance runs through the ribbon and heats it. You can touch the ribbon and not get shocked but you CAN get burned even when it's not red. If both ends of the cord were hooked to the eyebolts, the result would be a direct short and some fireworks. I'm not an electrician but that's the best way I can explain it. My father-in-law told me of the idea. He had an electric fence way back when that worked this way. Mike
