Title: Need help choosing carbon arrow
Post by: ARCHERXP on April 23, 2009, 08:06:00 AM
I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions on how to choose a carbon arrow for my new longbow?

I'm at around 44-45 pounds at 28"

I shoot wooden ones at the moment at around 485 gns

I'd like to keep it there, between 485-500 gns

I was thinking 100 grain broadhead/field tip with 100 grain brass insert, but I don't know how to calculate the spine/length of the arrow.

Thanks for the help

goldtip 1535s.... 29" with 200 grains up front... will put you at 475 and very close in spine....they are the .600 spine .

ICS bowhunters are extremely affordable and I am happy with them.

Im not going to suggest any particular arrow(I have a hard enough time figuring out what my bows should use.) Carbons seem to be forgiving on spine but there are so many variables such as your release and the how close to center shot your bow is as well as the stuff you listed.

Archerxp,
I'll explain what I do and you can decide for yourself what is best with your style.

I start with a full length shaft in a spine I feel will work.
Install one arrow with a 50gr and another with a 100 brass insert.
Take 125,150,175,200gr (or heavier) points along to the bales.
I take a pad of paper to write the combinations down and what they do.
At about 10 to 12 yards I shoot both arrows with the same weight point and record the results.
I am looking for an arrow with the nock pointing straight back at me when it is stuck in the bales.
If nock left...too stiff, add weight to the point.
If nock right...too weak, less weight and/or trim the shaft off a little. Low or high nocks are nocking point issues on the string.  Note that if you "cant" the bow some of the low/high is the angle you hold the bow showing through.  I usually hold as vertical as I can when tuning bare shafts.
It is a bit of a long process but when you are done wet feathers in the rain even with a broadhead still fly good.
FYI: A Blackhawk 2000 28" long with a 100 gr insert and a 200 tip with a cresting wrap and 3-4" feathers weighs 475gr.
That particular arrow flies pretty good out of the draw weight you are, at least for for me it does.
Anyway, you get the idea of the process.  Have fun!

Hope I explained it so it is understandable...

Rick

I'm with Jacobsladder, goldtip 15/35's
(.600 spine) were what I needed for similar draw weight.

I played aroiund with .500 spine to no end, up to full length and 225 upfront, and while they flew tolerably with fletching, they had some issues.  Bareshafting at 35 yards, they wanted to make a hard left hand turn in mid air.

The goldtip 15/35 fly like lasers for me.
