Title: another boat hunt
Post by: RC on April 22, 2009, 02:48:00 PM
Went on a half day boat hunt. The River is still up so I couldn`t get where I wanted to go because it has dropped enough I could`nt boat to the Islands but low enough I would have had to swim a few places if I tried wading.

I only got on one pig, a big Blue boar but he winded me after I got to about 25 yards.Saw a pile of deer and....sssnnnaaakkkeeeess.I was planning on an all day hunt but my thermacell stopped working and skeeters were tormenting me so bad I headed out.The water is falling and I hope to gaff a pig with my Apex bow before Turkey season is out in May and the WMA closes.A few pics of the adventure.RC

Pretty neat RC... If the snakes don't get you, the poison ivy will...

How often do you hear of snake bites down there?

Very few snakebites that I know of.You gotta pay attention. My friend John Bookharts Grandad died from a rattlesnake bite in the face in the 60`s.I`ve been struck a few times and never been fanged. God watches over me my Mom said.I believe it.RC

My thermacell ran out of fuel then would not fire up when I changed out the cylinder. I tried another as well. I could hear the gas coming out but it would not arc.Five years old it was time. I usually carry a spare in the boat but not this time.

I`m not sure about shooting turtles. A whole lot of other stuff in and around the river thats good eating before I eat a turtle.RC

I can deal with the skeeters, but those snakes are hard to take.

Thanks for sharin' your trip RC!

Looks like your snake repellent was working effectively!

I have not used a Thermacell before, but I understand that they are also effective.

I hope you don't mind if I ask a couple of questions

Question 1:  does one carry the Thermacell in their shirt pocket (or pants pocket) or does it have a holster that hangs off your belt or what is the set-up?

Question 2:  in addition to repelling mosquitoes does the Thermacell also repel ticks or do you still need to pick them off manually?

Thanks again RC!

Shoot straight, Shinken

Shinkon, I carry my thermacel on a holster on my belt or quiver strap. They work mostly on skeeters and gnats. You have to spray around the top of your boots and waist line for ticks.

As far as snake skins go..I usually don`t kill even a venomous snake unless he`s in a place I go a lot. I may see him before I step on him this time but next time I may not.RC

snakes and politicians...only good one's a dead one!  After shooting too much with my Firehawk, I'm heading for my favorite spring creek today for a little R&R.  The rattlers should be on the rocks now, and since it's turned cooler, I'll have to watch where I put my feet.
