Post by: 7eyes on April 21, 2009, 09:30:00 PM
Just skinned this bow with one Fer de lance ( chircio chirpelo ?) Most dangerous snake in central and south america. Not sure if my photos brings out the greens and browns.

Beautiful!
Always wanted to see a fer de lance, ever since reading "Frog, The Horse Who Knew No Master" when I was ten. Well, there was a fer de lance in it.

Can we know a little more about your exquisitely skinned bow?

Killdeer,

This bow is one of my earlier radical R/D proven forward handle design. I put carbon back, well... fer de lance back over carbon, Curly maple, ash and a sliver of zebrawood limb laminations. Bloodwood riser and rosewood overlays.

Beautiful job on the backing.  My hat is off to the dude with the iron cahoneys who took that skin off the snake as well!

Where in the heck did you get a Fer de Lance skin?!? That's just cool right there.

I've loved bows with copperhead, canebrake, and even water moccasin skins but don't own them anymore. Something as far out exotic as your skin might tempt me down the snakey path again. Now, if only I can find a couple of Gaboon vipers...

Excellent looking bow! The nearest I've come to snake skins on a bow have been on my EFA quiver. Maybe I can get a Black Mamba or something-now I just have to get someone to stalk it for me!   :biglaugh:  Anyway, cool bow!

For those interested, Angelo at Bison Gear had some real exotic skins for sale last year. Not sure if he has any left but he had a bunch.

JC, I know where there are some Gaboon skins and I've thought like you, but Bob says they are way too thick and not good for skin job. What ya need is baby Gaboon viper skins. They are a mother of a snake and a 5 footer is twice as round as a diamondback.

Those snake-skinned bows look very nice.  I'd just have a hard time touching one -- if you know what I mean....

A little history on this skin. A friend shot the snake with an arrow because it was making it's home under a one room school house in a small community in the mountains of Costa Rica. The skin has been hanging up in my friends garage for years. I don't advocate running out and killing these snakes for decoration. They are there to do their job. Without them we would be over run by small rodents. The gardeners are always hacking them with their machetes, though. The small ones are the most dangerous, because they have not learned to control their venom.

OK, now I see the humor in the title. I didn't know what a Fer de Lance was. Except now I want to take my feet off the floor and curl them on my chair, as usual when exposed to such snake thoughts.  :(    :D

In Honduras they are called a barba amarilla (yellow beard) because of the yellow under their jaw. They are one of the few snakes that is very aggressive. I have seen them on paths and you have to get out of their way or kill them. They will not try to get away or change their path. VERY, VERY agressive with very large venon capacity.

Saw a made for TV movie one time back in the 70's. It was about Fer de Lances.

A submarine crewman on shore leave bought some of these snakes from a vendor in a street market not realizing they were venomous. Well of course they got loose on board the boat after getting underway and naturally started biting and killing everybody.  Guess what the name of the submarine was...  The USS Fer de Lance!  LOL!!

The thing still looks very venomous.
