I started out chasing turkeys strictly with my bow 5 years ago. Along the way I have had a lot of close calls, missed shots and learning experiences. I was hoping this would be my year to end the drought and to do it with Miss Faith during her stay with me. Unfortunately I haven't been able to dial her in with the arrows/broadheads I have on hand yet so I have went with my faithful PSR Widow. Yesterday was a bust other than one hen in the field. This morning started with a bearded lady and 2 of her friends at 10 yards (http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r27/sparson_bucket/42109004.jpg)

After the girls moved up the hill I heard the spit and drum of "Meleagris gallopavo" and caught movement out of my left window as he struted in. I decided if he was still strutting when he hit my shooting window I would letr rip. He was and I did. (http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r27/sparson_bucket/42109008.jpg)

And THEN? And THEN??? :saywhat:

Sorry guys,
Didn't mean to Lamb you along. I got busy at work and couldn't get back on. Anyways he comes into the window in full strut and I realease and he turns inside out and trys to fly but can't and then he is gone back the way he came peeling off line at a rapid clip that gradually slowed and then became still. I waited a few minutes and then got out of the blind for a picture.

So I decide to pack up and give him a little time to die, well by the time I get back to the truck my dad has shown up ready to help with the tracking job. So after about 25 minutes we head back to the field and start following up the line which ran into a ditch in the middle of the field. The first thing I see is blood which is bright and red. Followed by my turkey blowing out of the ditch with the arrow in him and he is headed towards the creek. After about 150 yards of the line goes by us it stops and we figure he is hiding under some brush by the creek and figure the best thing is some more time to expire. Well we give him two hours and then head back to follow up the string which runs over the bank of the creek where we find.....

Mr. Turkey has pulled the arrow out crossing the creek. :banghead:

So off goes dad to get a bird dog for the rest of the trail. As he is leaving I tell him to bring his shotgun back too. I am not feeling good about a recovery now. :scared:

Keep the Faith.

SWP...I've been on a five year journey too. I've had opportunities...but no luck! Hope this is my year too! Congrats and keep the story going!

I believe you got him!!
-
I really, really don't like Charlie's storytellin' style :saywhat: but you are some kind of special when you are your own verb...
Lambin' :clapper: that is priceless.
I am looking forward to the final pictures of the quest completed...he's got to be laying on the other side of the creek!

Turkeys with a Trad bow are one of the hardest critters I have hunted. They never hold still, see every move you make, and are just plain hard suckers to kill with a arrow. I started the season off here with a slam dunk and drilled a Jake at 20 yards right through his back and out his chest dead in 5 yards. Since then filling my second tag has not been easy includeing two misses at big toms. Hold in there and keep after them!
-
Very cool story and ....build up/tease!!
Hope you found him!!!!
-
Thanks, 4Rnr!
I suppose that one might say that our fair narrator is, um, on the Lamb.
Killdeer :D

OK, so I meant 7 Mountain time :)
So here I am peeing my pants wondering if I will ever see my bird again or if he is coyote bait. My dad gets back with the calvary (Duke and Sage) our English Setters and I let dad know shoot first ask questions later. We cross the creek and after a few minutes Duke starts acting like he smells something so I tell him to "hunt dead" and about 2 seconds later Mr Gobbler takes off on a run with Sage in hot pursuit and me doin my best to keep up while hollering shoot to my dad. Luckily he didn't have a shot. I get up to a road and look towards the creek to see my turkey laying beside a multi flora rose bush with his head up. He sees me and crawls into it. So I ease down there and start emptying my quiver. The hunt gods found favor in me today.

Just in case anyone doesn't think it was my lucky day, when we got back up to my great aunts old house I found these.

Just goes to show I would rather be lucky than good any day. :)
Thanks for tagging along.

Nice finish!
The Morel's topped it off nicely.
-
Awesome...so there is hope, year three for me!
Josh
-
Oh yeah details.....I didn't even think to weigh him but his beard was 9 5/8" and spurs were 5/8", not the Boss Thunder Chicken but good enough for me!!! Black Widow 56" PSR 55#@28". Ramin arrows topped with a STOS 145 grn broadhead and a string traker (don't leave home without it)wrapped around the business end of the arrow.
-
Josh,
I've killed many a turkey with my shotgun but this has been my achilles heel since I began. If you stick with it and take some free advice given on this website I guarantee you there is hope.
Hopefully I can get some quality time with Faith and use her a couple of days next week before I have to pass her along.

Very glad you got him... CONGRATS!!

Congrats

Great story! Bet it made Charlie proud! Congrats. on the bird and follow-up. I'm still trying to find one of these shy public land toms to get an arrow into.
-
Way to keep at it!!!! Sound like a great time with lots of highs and lows!!!
-
Nice bird
-
way to go Scott this is my 4th year with a bow but I'll keep on trying.

swp where did the first arrow hit? just curious ... thanks
-
Thanks for sharing
-
Brad,
It hit in the front of his chest (quartering away) and ended up going towards his sternum, the best I could tell it didn't hit anything vital but he was covered in blood and couldn't fly. I honestly didn't think he was quatering away that hard or I would have given him a few more steps.

Scott, Glad it all worked out for ya bud..congrats!
There's a bunch of nothing but bone and breast meat in the lower front/front chest area. It can easily fool ya into thinking you made a good shot....
I've learned, and tell other as well....unless you are absolutely 100% sure you made a great hit, if the bird goes out of site, give it at least two hour...it's tuff to do sometimes...but if he's dead,he'll be there either way...
Way to stick with it :clapper:
-
Great job Scott! Glad it worked out for you. Congrats on a great trophy.
Bill

I've not archery hunted turkey, I bet they ARE son of a guns to (A) pick the right spot on and (B) executing the shot !
-
Nice work  congrats
-
Great job, congratulations! :clapper:
-
Congratulations on your quest, Scott! That's a great bird and a great story to go with it. There's nothing like earning it to make it that much sweeter.
-
CCONGRATULATIONS Scott!!!!!! :clapper:

Congrats on your Turkey Scott! Glad you found him. I haven't been on here much lately. No luck here in KY yet, not even a close encounter.

Very nice, great recovery. I have an English setter as well. Maybe I'll train her to track turkeys and deer.
-
If there's a more worthy adversary for the traditional bowhunter......I haven't hunted it.
Congratulations.

Well done and great story, thanks for sharing!
