Hi there,
Thanks to the kindness of Tradgangers last year I was able to built with some success an Osage selfbow.
It was my son's Christmas present, so now I need to build my own hunting bow :) using the second stave I received.
Here are the requirement:
It will be my moose/cariboo/elk hunting bow so I'm aiming high 60# low 70# at my 27" draw
I'm used to cant so I will use 100% or so of the stave length
This is the stave that I thinned last year for it to cure :

Lots of width, lots of 100% natural reflex
:) ;)
I will take my time and will post my progress

Looking good Manny, 60-70# ouch

All right Manny!!! :bigsmyl:
Buildalong,Buildalong,Buildalong!!!
-
We're all rootin for success Manny!!!
-
Thank you all.
Here are some mesurements:
Length: almost 72"
Width: 2 1/4
Natural reflex: 1 3/4
I was thinking of these bow dimensions:
Width of the limbs will be 1 5/8 tapering smoothly to 1/2, and using the 72" of the stave
No more battery for the cam tonight :(

Maybe you could use the full width, take the length down to 66 or 68 inches and make iy a pyramid bow with a flat belly. That should give you zero finger pinch and still a lot of wood over which to spread the compression.

Brett, good idea, where can I find good infos on pyramid bows?
Thanks,
F-Manny
-
Manny, I would make it 66"but I would make the limb width 1 3/8" to midlimb then taper to 3/8" tips. It looks like you have plenty of limb thickness to get a 60-70# bow with a semi-round belly. For what it's worth, that's my 2 cents.
-
Hi Dano,
I there a reason not to use the length more and let say make a 68" bow?
Same question for the width.
Your input is extremely valuable to me!
Tonmorrow: Drawing of the bow lines, and carving of the stave to close dimensions, I can't wait  :campfire:

IMO Bow wood determines the design, the Pyramid design is well suited to white wood bows. Where as osage makes a great little pony bow, You can get away with a shorter narrower limbed bow. I am no where near a good bowyer but after building a few osage bows I know what demensions I think work best. After building a 58" 60# bow of osage you realize how well you can push the limits of wood. Keep this in mind as well, in starting out we all tend to overbuild a bow, just for caution sake, those bows end up on the shelf.
-
I hear you loud and clear
Thank you Dano for the wise words
-
Here is where I am today:
I reduced the stave to the overall final dimensions of the bow plus a frog hair:
Overall length 68, future nock to nock 66", limbs are 1 5/8 right now to mid limb tapering to 3/8 (scary thin :scared: )

Chasing a ring on the back, thinning of the limbs
(they are about 1" thick right now).

 :bigsmyl:
-
At least you have a shop Dano! :knothead: :banghead:
I work in the house, you can imagine how happy my wife is!
-
Well you can always come over here and work my friend. I have no life so I am home most of the time and would be happy to have someone come work here.
Hey btw I met another bowyer from France living here and guess what city he was born in? hehehehehe
it was too much but man is he an artist with bows.
-
Lookin' good Manny. It looks like you left plenty of thickness, but in the future I would recommend chasing your ring BEFORE you cut the thickness profile......just in case you have to go an extra ring or two down. Not that I'VE ever done that, but I've heard of bowyers cutting the thickness down first and then not having enough wood left after violating a ring or two chasing. :D

That's funny Dano!

Thank you Doug, very valid point.
I kept a security margin, at the next ring to the ring I want I am left with 1" thick wood :) not near ready to even think to bend! :)
Ragi, I'll take you on the offer at one point.
What lost Arra said, big time!

Now I will work to get closer to the final dimensions, and then floor tiller.
Being a beginner, I need to go slow!
F-Manny
-
Manny, when I quit being a beginner is when I started going slow. Take it slow and easy. You will fare better. Looks like you have a primo osage stave to work with. Looking forward to seeing it when it's done...and the process to get there. Pat

Lookin good Manny, nice progress.

Here is where I am now:
Nocks are cut, floor tillered, all the power I wanted and more:

You're a master with wood and will be using it alot and taking it to all the shoots along with my sweet tippit and one pretty little antler handled knife my loving hubby made for me (or I should say, I snagged from him when he was'nt looking) ;)
