Title: Turkey feather ??
Post by: MCNSC on April 20, 2009, 09:20:00 AM
I am getting several sets of turkey wings and plan to make fletching from the feathers. I have been reading most of the post on doing this but have a few questions. 1st- How many usable feathers can I expect from one wing and how do I know which feathers will make good usable fletching?
Thanks..Mike

The primary feathers are the longest ones they start at the wing tip and go back and make the best fletching, expect 8 - 10 feathers per wing. Don't throw the secondaries away either, they are the shorter feathers behind the primaries and you can get some good usable fletching from them also.

And if you check out David Mitchel's website (sponsors list) you can find out how to turn your secondaries into primaries... trade.
You'll get info on proper handling of the feather as well.
