a couple weeks ago i saw a yearling bull moose feeding in the area, firs thing i thought of was that i could shoot that moose in town next fall when he is a spike fork during the first week which is bowhunting only, a few days later i see the same bull feeding on a really high snow bank, i thought it was strange for a moose to be on such a precarious spot, but times are tough. well ten minutes later i was driving back that way and told my wife that the "little" moose was there, well when i drove by i saw that he had fallen and got his head stuck beetween a couple trees, i thought that he was still alive and i could help but that was not the case, he had choked out in no time. i couple came by and said that they called the fish and wild life, since the moose was on the road right of way i figured it would go to the road kill list, i was sad all night thinking that i had lost my chance for him next season, well the next morning he was still between the trees with a fresh coat of snow, then that evening he was still there, and it had warmed alot, i called fish and game and fish and wild life, both closed due to some holiday, so i called the troopers, they told me i could do nothing, i even offered to gut it so it could be salvaged at least the next day, they said no, i was a bit disgusted that a animal like that could go to waste in such public view, well that changed when the oficer called and told me i could harvest the moose and that their was no one else going to, so i did, had to use the f150 to pull it out, took it home gutted it on a tarp and took it to work the next day, we hoisted it up with a bobcat and skined him, i was shocked at how skinny it was you could see all the joints poking through the muscle, he had a strong smell. i decided to grind it all with some pork shoulder to cut the stench, in all i got 50lbs yes only 50 of edible meat, not really worth the work and missed wages but in all i felt good about it in the end and he makes some good meatloaf. hope this isnt too off topic
Jason... You stand respected for your action in my eyes. Others would have driven by and left it at, "Oh Well..."
... mike ...
if it was stinkin,,,I wouldnt be eatin it :D
Sometimes, nature is a cruel taskmaster. yet the
things that happen, happen. We can't always see
the big picture. We just have to try to find our place in the picture and do our best to improve the part we inhabit.
so trapper you mean if you had a really rutty buck you wouldnt eat it?
Good job Jason
Good job Jason!
I would be concerned about a smell from the meat, but you are there and can tell if it's a bad smell or a strong aroma...either way; Good on you for stickin' with it to the end.
oh the smell was just the moose, no rot, just a little green in the ribcage where the blood laid the night after gutting, ive smelled worse from fresh killed caribou and blacktials.
You did good
Shame for such a great natural creature to come to such a sad end. Must have struggled quite a while.
So much for the ban hunting people.

I hate to see a animal suffer. The hardest thing in this sport is dealing with taking a life. Good job Jason.
Great Job!! You are welcome in my camp anytime.
great work makin the best of a bad deal. least he didnt go to waste....
you would think the troopers would have given the green light to slice and dice right away.
i belive that natural deaths are the department of fish and game, but there were no results from them, im kinda impressed with the troopers doing the right thing even if it may not been by the book.
Ya did good. I'm glad the troopers unbent some for you too. Some of them can be real stinkers themselves when it comes to that kind of thing. I know they're just doing thier job but it does hurt to see meat go to waste that way.
"that changed when the oficer called and told me i could harvest the moose and that their was no one else going to, so i did,"
He probably had to call all his buddys to see if any of them wanted it first....
In over a half century of roaming the mountains we have seen some strange , sad and illogical ways that wildlife has died. We have summed up these acts of nature 's way with: The coyotes have to eat too.
