I did a search, but am looking for more opinions on these.
Dad and I are going to be chasing thunder chickens all weekend, and looks like we're going to be getting wet! I use the fletch dry powder inside my fleece cover, but am wondering if rain vanes would be a better option?
I know some people have used the rain vanes with good luck. I tried tuning some a couple years ago for a Caribou hunt and could not get them to fly unless I went to an elevated rest. I have used the feather powder with good results but I think the fleece cover would hold moisture against the feathers and make them absorb more moisture? I would stick with your tuned set up wet feathers are not going to shoot that bad at close range.
Plastic bag inside your fleece cover?
Good luck chasing gobblers!
I like the bag idea. Thanks for the input.
Guys if you want fletches to work during rain use wild turkey feathers and wrap them like they do primitive arrows will last for days in the pouring rain ---- herb
I have used the plastic bag & it works well. Frank
Spray on sillicone from any sports store works great.
Try a Safari tuff quiver!
Bought a spray can of Camp Dry from Bass Pro for about $6 ...works great. I also use a bag.
I tried the rain vanes and couldn't get flight at all. Maybe cause I'm a lefty and shoot backwards! :bigsmyl:
Never tried 'em on a raised rest though---I shot off shelf

i have gotten 4" vanes to fly off the shelf shooting them cock-in but I have been just using the powder and my catquiver which keeps the fletch protected
I have also heard that goose feathers work well in wet conditions. I was also curious about the rain vanes for frog season this summer.
Here's my story on RV's. Started with field pts. They didn't fly worth a crap on the first shots (fletched 2 arrows). By the 12 shot, 6 each I noted a positive difference. I don't want to say they flew the same as my feathers, but pretty close at 20 yards. Close enought to think I could hunt with 'em. I put some broadheads (160 gr Snuffers) to do a hunting test. The results were crapola. Didn't hunt with them.
Just so I don't answer the question completely. That's a wide BH. I could have tried a 160 gr STOS, but didn't. I've been shoot them at 10 feet in the basement and notice the "down" vane is more separated than the others. Even more so than when I did the Snuffer test. Point is I think you have to break them in and I should make another test.

Listen to Herb. Wild turkey feathers work great. I was the envy of everybody last year shooting a course in the pouring rain at Denton Hill. :goldtooth:
