Post by: pintail_drake2004 on April 11, 2009, 11:45:00 PM
Mods if this does not belong here let me know!

Hello gents. I have a few turkey wings i bartered for with a few friends for the feathers, and the wing bones are intacted. They are all fresh, i recieved the wings within 4 hours of harvest on every set. Can someone please post some info on how to make one of these things? I have never done it nor seen it done so i have no clue where to start. a few pictures would be nice too.

thank you
Jordan!

Jordan, clean the wing bones and boil, and let dry.The one's I have are glued together with silicone and can be decorated to suit your needs or artistic abilities. Do a search and I'm sure there is more info and pics. They are fun, my son likes his. Put the tip to your puckered lips and suck pasts, kind of like blowing across a pop bottle, only backwards! Makes you wonder who in the BLANK came aross this! Have fun, and Good Shootin to you!

Really,,, Who figured that out?

I picture an early Native American who was lucky enough to take a bird. After cooking over the fire, the klan starts tearing into the bird as all are very hungry. Of course the wings being smaller parts,, they are passed to the young ones of the klan. After eating all that is edible, they start in on desert,,, the bone marrow of the bird. Dad tells the little ones,, break the bones open and suck on it to get out the marrow. The young'ns are franticly sucking on the wing bone until it made the sound,,, yelp.... Dad say's, give me that bone it sounded just like the bird before I sent an arrow through him. The wingbone call was born!

Thats my theory and I'm sticking to it!!!!

Joe, no morrels? Thanks for the history lesson. I thought Wiley Coyote of the Acme Company invented it! I love your bows and stories too!

I have been making them for a long time.  This is another one a fellow made.  I usually use fly tying thread to wrap the joints, putting some fly head cememt on the thread.  Finish with a high gloss poly spray.  The attachment here is the toenail gluded on to hold the lanyard.

I found it best to scrap the meat off, then boil for about 5 minutes.  Blow out the marrow with an air compressor.  Soak in hydrogen preoxide a few days to make the bones nice and white.  Cut off the knuckles before boiling.  Fit the bones, shorten of needed and epoxy joints.  Sand joints and entire call.  Wrap joints with thread.  Clean out webbing with a Dremel and a long small drill bit.  Decorate and apply polyurathane ( high gloss).

Good luck
