Title: New Hill Cane Arrows
Post by: Pat B on April 07, 2009, 10:39:00 AM
I usually try to send Art Butner(Artcher 1) some of the hill cane I collect from along my driveway each year. Art really loves this cane and these pics are what he does with them. When I got home from work yesterday, these were waiting for me....

Six arrows without fletching. I will fletch them myself, one Cherokee style 2 fletch arrow and a hunting arrow(cane but not hill cane)with one of his trade points.

These are footed arrows. The only way to tell the footings is by the different coloration. The transition can't be felt.

All have hardwood self nocks added

Cherokee two fletch

...and Art's trade point with solo quiver.  Art makes these heads from old circular saw blades, dadoes them into the foreshaft and sets it in epoxy. ENJOY!

Thanks guys. I'm lucky to have Art for a friend.
You will note he didn't apply a wrap on the cane behind the foreshaft. This is a new method he is trying and said he hasn't broken one yet. Art has seen my shooting so I guess he really wants to put them through their paces. d;^)

Ruddy, cane is probably the best arrow material(at least natural if not all) that there is and it is free for the taking. More work to set up shootable arrows than store bought carbon but also more feeling of accomplishment when done.
If you come to Hickory, I'll give you some to try and show you how!

Which one Curt. The Cherokee two fletch or the standard 3 fletch. Both are only tied on.

Here you go Curt. This is Art Butner's version of a Cherokee two fletch. No glue used for the fletching. Tied on with thread and the forward and aft wrap are set in glue I believe.
The hardwood self nock is maple.

Top draw stuff Pat.  Art got some chops.

Straighening cane is a patient mans game.  There's a fellar at my 3d club that makes 'em and you'd swear it was aluminum w/ a cane colored wrap.  Uses tru oil and they're are dead straight.

Cane makes an amazing arrow, very forgiving, once you get it straight.

Dano says Pat is lucky to have a friend like Art.

Looks like Dano is lucky to have a friend like Pat.

OK, I confused myself.  Nice arrrows!

Mims Art's arrows are also as straight as you can imagine. They spin as true as any arrow I have ever tested , fly like darts, are tough as nails and are incredibly beautiful. I think the reason he likes me is he likes the hill cane that grows along my driveway. d;^)
