Title: Shrew mentoring needed
Post by: AlanF on April 06, 2009, 05:45:00 PM
Had the opportunity to speak with Ron today and I'm set to mail in my deposit and begin "THE WAIT."  So-far-so-good right?  Where I'm having trouble is deciding which bow to go with - 54" Classic Hunter or 54" Lil' Favorite - any pros and cons to be aware of?  I'm fairly new to all this and my only frame of reference is a Horne's Brushbow (3 piece T/D).  My bow will be somewhere around 43-45 lbs @28".  From the measuring my wife and I did it appears I am pulling about 27.75" - 28".  Being active duty Navy and moving regularly and traveling frequently this will be my ONE bow for some years to come and I will most likely do the bowbolt system.  Thankfully it is looking like I will have the pleasure of being at Compton's this year and meeting Ron and Gregg in person and maybe they will have a Shrew or two in my poundage range for me to try out.  So what do you think - am I on the right path and is there anything else I need to be thinking of?  Will one of these bows be more forgiving (is that the same as easier to shoot?)?  Wood choices.  At this time (meaning it may well change) I am leaning towards brown dymondwood and phenolic in the riser with walnut veneers, but there is that beautiful curly etimoe...  You can see this is not going to be easy and therefore any advice is welcome, and needed.  I'll even look at any pictures of Shrews you feel compeled to post...  Thanks for listening.

Alan

I shot my buddies Lil Favorite at Kalamazoo. Wow!
What a bow. I want one so bad now. Not had the chance to shoot, a Classic Hunter but that Lil Favorite is sure a bueatiful shooting bow. Doug

I own a 54" Classic Hunter and have not shot the Lil' Favorite.  I plan on getting one some time down the road.  I don't think you can go wrong with either.  I have a take down on order and for now it is going to be a Classic Hunter if I don't change my mind by then and go with a 58" Super Shrew.  I would definately go with a takedown whichever way you go.  I bet Ron will have some for you to shoot at Comptons. The Shrews are great bows. By tonight you should have quite a few guys chime in that own both the Classic Hunter and Lil Favorite.

I would say try them out.  I have one of each and they are both awesome bows.  The Classic Hunter is smoother on the draw but they are both smooth.  I shoot my Lil' Favorite a little bit better and it is faster but that is common between recurves and longbows.

Here's the one Doug referred to.  56" and 50#s at 30".  Cocobolo lams and Riser.  Sweet shooter, it'll be with me at Compton's if you'd like to meet and try it out.

Go with some phenolic in the riser --the bow needs a little weight.

Try as many as you can at Compton, then deceide. I shot alot of them at Kalamazoo and liked the 56" Classic Hunter the best.

Rick thanks for the offer to shoot your beautiful bow.  I will plan to take you up on it.  Also hope try out as many other Shrews as I can shoot.
