Open thy eyes, walked right up on a 3 foot black snake while shed huntin this afternoon. Glad he was a, " good snake " ! Wished him happy huntin on the copperheads and rattlesnakes and went on my way.
nocams :scared:
man you should have shot it and used it on your bow! :scared: :scared:
I cant wait to start catching snakes. I envy you guys with the "fun" varieties in your area. Awesome creatures.
Man, a couple of years ago some friends and I were out shooting. I went to check my target downrange and ran into a big 'ol rattler. It was every bit of 6 ft. It jumped one way and I jumped the other! We looked at eachother for a few seconds and it just slid away to a rat nest next to us. My buddy came downrange with a shotty, but we didn't kill it. We figured if it had lived this long and got to be that big and beautiful, it's got many more years.
The only good snake is a dead one.
(Somebody had to say it)
fido,
two years ago at a TN shoot as we approached one of the long range bonus targets we found a surprise too ! I had shot under the 3D antelope and while looking for my arrow almost stepped on a copperhead. He was out in the open field catching some sun. It took two shots but my son drilled his head to the ground with his just made selfbow.

My thoughts as well Leo.
i ran into a rattler up on mt hood back in my early twenties working for the forest service we were cutting survey lines i was packin a 038 stihl...potent snake medicine. :D :bigsmyl:
ANY of them give me the heebie-jeebies so bad I slowly run away from a snake backed bow :goldtooth:
Yes they look pretty on bows (wish i had one) but they are better alive to keep the rodent population in order. If you have a lot of snakes, that means you have lots of rodents.
RAT- LER
IMHO
Rob
(i would love to have a dark green pacific rattler on my bow)
Man you guys woulda freaked if ya ever walked into my "uncle's" house. He had dozens of rattlers...cottonmouths, copperheads, numerous types of constrictors, king snakes, rat snakes...when his front door shut, and all the rattlers started buzzing....ah....man the memories.
Ishiwannabe can I go to your Uncles. My wife won't let me have venomous snakes till the kids are older, for now alls I'm allowed are pythons. Its a great way to obtain bow backings you can match em up "on the hoof" so to speak
The only good snake....is a dead one. Sorry...get another predator to kill the rodents.
I dont even like big worms.
Snakes are good people too, don't dis them just becuz yer scared of em. They have their place in the scheme of things and most of them are WAY more scared of you than you are of them and will leave you alone if you let them. I grew up around all kind of snakes including rattlers and have never had a problem with them. That said I wouldn't mind eating some rattle snake again if I get the chance!
My niece (now 13) is the is the only one that eats rattlers. She loves them! My bro dug one out an killed it. He then skinned it and fried it up. Apparently you couldn't get her away from the meat.
"I dont even like big worms."
I hear ya.
"Snakes....why does it have to be snake?"
Snake, the other other other other "white meat"... ;)
Down here where I live snakes are thick. I never get used to them.I have a big King Snake that lives here around my house and small barn and I let him live. A few Indigos as well....But the rest of`m gotta go.After a couple slaps on the leg by copperheads that did`nt get through to meat and a cottonmouth that did`nt bite quite get over the shoe and countless encounters with rattlesnakes you`ll get where you can`t stand the ones with fangs.RC
Windtalker, sadly, my "uncle Eddie" passed about ten years ago. He wasnt really my uncle, but my dad's best friend since they were five. He was, as far as I know, the only licensed person in NY to keep venomous snakes. When he passed, most were donated to zoos, wildlife rehabilitation centers and the like. I know a majority of his rattlers came from a certain town south of here in NY...
RC, good point. Just a shame, IMHO, that such neat creatures get killed for being a threat.
I spent some time in Ga. Man ya should have seen the Drill Sgt's face when I walked out with a cottonmouth...needless to say, numerous push-ups were required.
Voice of experience RC. We've got them thick along the coast and mostly diamondbacks around here. They don't have to bite you to make you hurt yourself. I've dislocated a few hog hunts from rattler strikes. TP&W released Indigos here to control rattlesnakes.
Let me Make this very simple ! I hate Snakes ,chiggers , ticks etc!! I will be happy with this kind of weather and hunting only Moose and Bear for the rest of my life ( about a1/4 tank left) rather than put up with all them creepy ,crawler critters. Live and let live- where would we be without the one that tempted Eve?? It would be such a dull world...
Well I hate em too, snakes...but most of the time if you dont bother them ur ok, I just hate when they fall in the boat when Im fishing. Its happened a time or 2 . Better than 4 cups of coffee to get ya going in the morning. :wavey: :goldtooth:
Had a friend of mine, wife got bitten by a copper head this past weekend. Last I heard she was doing o.k. Makes me want to move to Hawaii this time of year.
Unless rattlers get too close to the house i leave em alone. May take a couple for a bow this year.
I see 6 or 8 rattlers a year aand have never even had a close call. Now a copperhead or cotton mouth is different. Our little copperheads will pop you quick. And a cotton mouth is an evil creature that will follow you home. All cotton mouths must die, the stinkin vermin!

That must be a state law in NY ... I have kept a few "Hot" snakes in the past and there was no state laws dictating what you could keep as long as it wasn't listed.
I kept a copperhead for about a year, she tamed down so much (she never was that aggresive anyway) I could reach into the cage and rub her on the tail.
I was marking some property lines for a timber sale a few years ago (with my snake leggins on) and I was making my way through some thick stuff while keeping my compass bearing when I stepped on something that felt like a waterbaloon. I paused for a second becasue it felt kind of weird (I didn't know what it was and my mind was trying to figure out what could make my foot squish around like that). I took another step off of it and tunred and looked and I had dead centered a 4 foot timber rattler.... and there was another one laying right beside it (mating season I suppose). My heart rate got up when I realized what I had done, but the two snakes never rattled or acted aggressive, they quickly retreated to thicker brush off the property line.
Stepped square in the middle of a diamondback around dark thirty. It does feel just like a water balloon. Your mind works like a supercomputer discharging sights, smells, and noises. Took less than a second to wind up in a mesquite tree. They only bite for food or to protect themselves. They do good things. Thumbs up.
Rattler is good eating if you fry them up right.
Human snakes are the worst kind. Rather deal with a copperhead anyday. IMHO

There are a few bowyers out salivating at the thought of getting they're hands on those!!!
I have a bow coming next week that will be wearing some of those.
For the record I like snakes...but I've never heard the rattle of one and not known where it was. Never heard the rattle of one for that matter either.

THE FELLER THAT SAID THEM SNAKES WAS MORE AFRAID THAN US WAS 180 DEGREES OUT OF PLUMB!
I was walking to stand in early mornin darkness, as i approached the ladder I smelled something nasty...all around the bottom of ladder were bunch moccains, mating ...what a smell...I killed em all right there...the only one I want to touch would be on a bow ...dead! :wavey:
Snakes may be scared of us but I bet they don't about crap their pants when they see us.Anything that moves around without legs just ain't normal. We call em no shoulders round here.
SNAKES CHIGGERS YA CAN KEEP EM I HATE EM (http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh305/jeffburg/hair-1.gif)
This one almost got me on the leg before he ate a judo. And no I wasn`t trying to kill him when he bit.RC

On the ranch I used to work at in Montana we found a half-a-dozen or more western Dbacks without rattles. Now that's scary when you don't even get a warning.
I leave em alone most times. Especially when I'm in their territory. If they're intruding in my space that's a different story.
Unclewhit, could they have been gophersnakes? Lots of them around in our area, and they do resemble a diamondback. No mistaking that rattle of a d'back. Gets ones attention real quick.
I've heard of timber rattlers without rattles being called "pilot snakes". Don't know why...
