Title: Curly Koa???
Post by: Jim Neaves on April 04, 2009, 11:55:00 PM
I am looking to get some really sweet looking curly koa and just have not found a good connection yet. I don't need alot but I really need quality. 2" by 2" by 18" piece would do it.

thanks, Jim

I was looking around on the web trying to identify some wood on a bow and I seen a lot of sites that sell it to musical instrument makers and it looked really good. just google it and you should see some, if you don't try different words and such.

How long before you can shoot a bow or ride a bike if you put NAIR on your "Curly Koa"?

You may also want to try and find some curly australian blackwood.  It is in the same family as koa and has a very similar look.  I don't really know where to get it but I have seen some guitars with it and it looks extremely similar to curly koa.  Good luck

Were you perhaps entertaining idle dreams of The Magic Bow once again gracing the embracing arms of your junkwood bow rack, sweetie?

Koa is fairly soft for a riser.

I will be adding some layers of glass internally to the riser so it will stiffen it tremendously. No worries then!

Sounds like that will be beautiful.

My local wood supplier has some four in slabs of curly and mottled Koa at $36 bf. One slab would be over $300 and you'd still lose some cutting out the premium wood. Expensive stuff, but beautiful.

Soft?  I cut into one piece an it seems hard as a rock, granite not shale.

It burns as bad or worse than purpleheart or chechen.
