Title: Turkeys on the Hudson River
Post by: horatio1226 on April 02, 2009, 02:28:00 PM
I know there's turkeys on these 80 acres. I had one almost bump into my big ground blind last deer season. I decided to do some stumping and scouting. I pulled up to the wire that crosses the gravel road and when I got out of my truck, and I immediately see a big tom in full strut 20 yards in front of me right on the road. After he crossed the road and went into the woods, we started down the road. We went about 5 yards further down the road and could see about 20 birds crossing the road. It was a sweet sight. I still can't get the smile off my face. I got my 2 decoys, I got a second blind yesterday to set up. I got my calls and have been practicing. I am shooting better than I ever have before. This Kabekona I started shooting is a perfect fit for me. Still have to attach the string tracker.28 days to wait.   :bigsmyl:

Nice Brian. I have always seen a lot of turkey there(driving by). My friends lived right down the road and I could tell they were roosted a little NE of where you had your blind for deer....atleast then they did. Probably still use the same general area.

Try to figure out where they roost, and set up along natural travel corridors. You should have quite an opening day if no other hunters mess ya up. Good luck.

Looks like a good spot!!! If you shoot like you did on Sat. you'll be getting some taters ready for the turkey dinner. PICK A SPOT....ron w

I think I have their roosting spot figured out too. I just have to get them coming to me and pick a spot like Ron says and then...  :archer:

Brian, you think you're smilin' now...wait till you actually get after them    :p

And if ya kill one you'll feel like this    :jumper:

Watch and listen from a distance as much as you can from now till opening day.....you'll see tendencies in their movement, where they roost, strut, etc....I have as much fun scouting as I do hunting.

But if you do your homework, it'll only be a matter of time.....good luck!

Thanks Curt. I've learned a lot from watching your turkey posts.

I'll be up that way the second week of the season.  My buddy's son (buddy and I are both retired Army) is in his Plebe year at West point, and we're going up there for a long weekend of chasing turkies.

Should be a lot of fun, all 3 of us will be using trad bows of one type or another.
