Hopefully some of you can give me some advice.I am shooting a 56 in. Black Widow PSR III that is 53 lbs.at 26.5 inches (my approximate draw length.)In the recent past I have been shooting a lighter bow due to a shoulder problem but now it seems I am able to handle the PSR again.However I feel like my draw length is varying to around 27 inches now.Anyway I am shooting Heritage 150 arrows cut to 28.25 inches in length.These arrows have 3 5.5 inch feathers and arrow wraps and weigh an average 350 grains without a field tip. I am using a 200 grain field point so total weight is around 550 grains.I am also trying to bare shaft with the same type arrows bareshafted (less feathers and wraps)and they come out weighing around 525 grains.So far I have seen the bareshafts basically grouping right of the fletched ones and slightly low (1 to 2 inches @ around 17 yards).However I am not real sure of the consistentency of my shooting.Anyone else have any weight combinations that they feel I should try? I have 250 grains points,175 grain points,145 grain points,and 125 grain points.Also will the 25 grain difference in the bareshafts and the fletched and crested arrows make that big a difference?
25 grs will make a very slight difference. If you are hitting right only 1" at 17 yds, that is nearly as good as you might expect for bare shaft.
I would not be concerned about hitting low.
When we helped our customers bare shaft tune, most had draw and release issues that caused shafts to fly off more than 1-2". If we got it as close as you are, we accepted it. Adding the feathers hels solve the poor release and draw issues.
If you are a right hand shooter the shafts are showing a little weak.Now you need to test this by lowering point weight.If you lower point weight and the bareshafts move to center you know you aren't getting a false reading.
Because you are using large feathers and wraps,the 25 grains will make a difference.You can measure off 25 grains of electrical tape and wrap it around the arrow wrap-fletch area of your bareshafts.
If you can get good bareshaft-fletched groups with a lower point weight but still want to shoot a heavy point ,then you can trim one or two shafts just 1/4" at a time untill you get them grouping.
You might also try building out your sideplate a little which should allow you to shoot a slightly weaker shaft.It would be worth a try before you cut your shafts.
The farther you can move back and shoot consistantly the better tune you can get.However if you get good groups at 18-20 yards,don't drive yourself crazy trying to tune farther.
