found a youtube video showing super slow motion footage of arrows being shot out of a trad bow.
I thought it was especially interesting starting about 27 seconds into it (about the 3rd or 4th shot) you can see the fur string silencer.
Watch that thing! It folds all around to one side like a flag AND you can see it rotate several turns one way the the other way! Must be that a flemish twist string winds and unwinds during the shot? Never would have thought that. Don't know if it's from roling off the fingers or from the increase/decrease in tension during the shot. I'd imagine it's from the finger roll but don't know.

repost number 10... Great vid.
Really????
Guess me not hanging out here every day for an hour or more like I used to is showing eh?
Sorry for the repetition.
Did anyone on the previous 9 times notice the string silencers? I thought that was interesting anyway...
This guy has some other great videos too!!
Seems to be a good archer!
Thanks for sharing Dave, I didn't catch the other posts on this vid, so i'm glad you did it!! very cool stuff!! I too think that it's the string roll off the fingers that causes the string silencers to flap like a flag off to the side!! jim
Love seeing stuff like this...Thanks
Wow! Loved the music too!
That was really cool. There was a tremendous amount of work putting together that video.
Jack
I've seen it before as well, but I never grow tired of watching it. So much occurs in life the we never see because it happens to fast for it to register.
Cool video. The song is "Prologue", by Loreena McKennitt. It's on the CD "Book of Secrets", FWIW.
Haven't seen that before. Great video. Check out this one he made on bowfishing. Great footage.

Very, very neat. I had never seen it posted any of the previous times, and it is really educational... AND artistic!
I guess this is what is really going on whe we see our bows with carefully selected arrows "shooting like darts"!!
Thank you, Dave.
THANKS! That was really cool.
Molson, that bowfishing video was better than the paradox one!
I've gotta try that this year.
Seen a bunch but not these. Outstanding. Hard to imagine an arrow overcoming that much inertia and deflection.
I had seen this video before, a while back, on youtube but I still enjoyed seeing it again. I think the music is perfect for it. It's amazing how much the arrow bends, and rotates, too.
That's unreal, here's a still from the vid.

thats a definite "UNDERSPINED" shaft for whatever bow its launching from!
I also saw a massive torquing of the bow upon release in one of those shots...
Easton had done one quite a while ago with all types of equipment and it was more technical but just as illuminating...I received a copy through my role in IBEP as a Master Instructor.
Thanks for sharing it, Dave. I had not seen it before either.
Good video Thanks Dave.
Looks like he has his bow hand wrapped with something. Maybe he was thinking the arrow might break.
John
That is somethin wild to see there, cool vid man
I'm another that had apparantly missed this all of the previous times it was posted. Glad I caught this one - it is amazing!
Outwest, I noticed his hand wrapped in leather too. Just watching, it looks like he starts out with proper spined arrows then goes progressively lighter. You can see he starts out getting good arrow clearance then you see a couple where the nock is coming in and striking the riser. Even a couple flu'flu's look weak. Then you start seeing the total noodlification start to happen. The first one he has some sort of cloth on his fist and arm then the one that breaks, he's wrapped in leather so he obviously knew it was underspined. Still pretty cool.
Its a wonder we hit anything
The thing that I found interesting on that video was the rate at which the arrow was spinning relative to the progress toward the target. It made me think that there might be something to this single bevel trend.
THanks for posting. I had not seen it either.
There is a video information box on the right side of the video. In it, he explains using the weak arrow to catch it on video and setting it up so it would break. Said he was wearing a leather arm wrap and a helmet! The arrow was a 25/30 shot from a 70# Border.
Thats awesome! Thanks for posting it up! The still from the video is a pretty cool pic as well, amazing, thanks Leo!!
I tell ya watching an arrow being released never gets old! :archer:
The underspined arrow is just for showing what
can happen.
Here is the best one from yononindo IMHO

What kind of target was that, looks very durable.

Cool Video footage. Clarence Hickman the "Father of Scientific Archery" discovered Archers paradox years ago.I was fortunate to be able to view his original footage from way back in the day when I was a student of "TWAC" The World Archery Center more 20 years ago.
And the footage RAY Hammond is referring to is "The Winning Edge" by Easton which contains slow motion footage 5000-7000 frames per second ,more COOL STUFF !! If I remember correctly temps in the filming room were close to 200 degrees, that was needed for the slow motion footage.
Wow..it is amazing what the arrow does coming out of the bow but what about when it hits the target..great video.
That was interesting to see the silencers twiting.
I didn't catch the other post either.
Dave..we will have to get together for some bowfishing.

You are absolutely right Sir.
This arrow was "UNDERSPINED" !!
But is was quite deliberate!!!
I was doing this vid, just to show what can happen.
SAFETY FIRST!!!
The breaking arrow at the end of the video was NOT due to a lack of knowledge on my part - IT WAS QUITE DELIBERATE !!!
Different arrows shot from a 70 lbs recurve bow (a custom-made KHAN, by BORDER ARCHERY). At the end you will see what a 65 lbs recurve bow can do to an arrow (Port Orford cedar-spine 25-30, 100 grain tip, 30 inches long). I expected the arrow to break - it took the 70 lbs KHAN to make the arrow explode!
The drawlength was 29 inches.
This video will show you the archer's paradox and gives you an idea of how dangerous it can be to use the wrong spine. By the way, I was wearing a helmet and a good wrap of leather around my bow hand during the "dangerous" shots.
For your own safety, and also for your bow (it's akin to dry firing your bow), please don't try this at home!
Enjoy watching
Special thanks goes out here to Dave Bulla.
He got me introduced to this great site, by bringing up this video.
Daniel
You contributions to this site are very much welcomed with open arms Daniel....
Always nice to have someone who "walks the walk", contribute his pix, vid's, and equipment tips :campfire:
Good stuff bro...
Welcome to the Tradgang family yononindo(Daniel).
I not only learned from watching your video but it was a joy to watch. Thank you for making and sharing them. It's an art form that requires great skill and unfortunately it's not one I find in my quiver.
Thanks also to Dave Bulla for...
